This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager, and is a known defect for your particular model camera.. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free if you live in the US, Canada, and a select few other countries. If you live outside the US, contact Canon support for your country to see if they'll still honor the advisory (some still will, especially if you stress you knowledge that this is a known defect of the camera). They may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please see this link for more info.

Affected cameras with this problem include: A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110, IXUS V2/V3/300/400/430/500/II/IIs, IXY Digital 200a/300a/320/400/450/500/30/30a

Error 18, lens will not open or retract

Lens errors (also known as E18 errors on older Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Camera will not focus. Can here it trying but

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope the advise is useful. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

Canon Powershot A70. I

When you transferred the pics from the cards to your computer, did you use the "safely remove hardware" function before removing the cards or cord or whatever method you used? If not, this is why you're getting the error message. If the pics are safely downloaded, format the cards in the camera to get them working again.

Hello

OK, if the memory card itself is locked, you might sometimes get this error code. All you need to do is to take out the memory card and switch the lever on the left side to the unlock.

6c99e31.jpg

If the error is still displayed after you did the above, you might want to try the card in another camera.

If the card works in another camera . the problem is with your card reader in your camera.

If you open you sd slot and look inside with a sharp light , you should be able to see on the left side of the slot there is a little copper or spring steel lever switch. This switch work as follows:

1. When no card is inserted / no write protection , the switch is open and thus the protection is off.
2. When locked card is inserted , the tab is depressed and tells the camera that the card is lock.

Contrary to popular belief ,the little tab on the sd card is not an electronic switch and does not physically influence the card operation itself. If you put a locked card into a camera without a sd lock switch , you would still be able to use the card normally.

It is incredible difficult to fix this switch because of space limitations in the sd card. Look into the sd slot and if you can see the switch , use a needle to pull the little tab down toward the base of the camera by about 2mm or until it works being careful not to bend it.

If this does not resolve your problem , there might be a short in the switch circuit and the camera will need to be disassembled to resolve this error. This should cost no more than $50.

Please feel free to contact me if you need further information

Kind regards
Andrea

Issue: Memory card Error
Solution: Try a different memory card and/or Reformat memory card PowerShot A70

Formatting a CF Card You should always format a new CF card or one from which you wish to erase all images and other data.
caution_a70.gifPlease note that formatting a CF card erases all data, including protected images and other file types. Please check the contents of the CF card before formatting it.
  1. Turn the power on.

  2. Press the <MENU> button and select [ tools_icon.gif(Set up)] using direction_arrow_lt.gifor direction_arrow_rt.gif.

    format_menu_1.gif

  3. Select format_icon_a70.gif(Format) using direction_arrow_up.gifor direction_arrow_down.gifand press the <SET> button.

    format_menu_2.gif

  4. Select [OK] using direction_arrow_lt.gifor direction_arrow_rt.gifand press the <SET> button.

    format_menu_3.gif

    • To cancel formatting instead, select [Cancel] and press the <SET> button.
    • The capacity of the CF card displayed after formatting will be less than the rated capacity of the CF card. This is not a malfunction of the CF card or camera.

  5. Press the <MENU> button.
note_icon_a70.gif
  • If the camera does not work properly, the inserted CF card may be malfunctioning. Reformatting the CF card may solve the problem.
  • When a non-Canon brand CF card is malfunctioning, reformatting it may solve the problem.
  • CF cards formatted in another camera, computer or peripheral device may not operate correctly. When that happens, reformat the CF card with this camera.

The sensor has failed due to age, a very common fault on all older digital cameras. Repair is totally uneconomical as it is a professional job only and spares are almost as rare as **** **** and may well have the same age-related fault even if you can find them. Sorry, but your camera has done fairly well to last around six or seven years and now must be replaced.

Dropped my digital camera in pool I let it dry

I am sorry but once any electronic equipment and water intermix, there is an immediate irreversible chemical reaction, at circuit board level. and this renders the unit totally unrecoverable, in any normal sense, you see current goes through the water to places it never usually would. No amount of drying out or anything can fix it, as I related, there is an instant reaction, especially if ON at the time of immersion, that totally ruins the unit.

When i power my canon powershot A70 the display on

Hello there,
The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.
