Canon PowerShot A510 Digital Camera - Page 5 Questions & Answers
Camera does not turn on
Yes there is, but it's tiny, soldered to the main circuit board, and buried deep inside the camera. But there's two other things you should first check. There's a tiny switch on both the SD card door and the battery door. These switches are closed by small plastic protrusions on the doors as they are closed. These little plastic pieces can sometimes wear down or break off. If so, you'd need to jury-rig something to make sure both switches are closed.
My camera is not turning on even when we put in
There could be 3 problems:
- broken memory card door switch
- broken battery door switch
- dead fuse
I have seen all of these on A510 and A520. If you have a multimeter, some experience and like to repair it yourself, I could help you. My e-mail is
[email protected]If not, you should give it to a local camera repair shop or Canon service center for a repair.

Camera won't stay on
Are you still using alkaline batteries? If so, alkaline batteries just don't have the power for more than a few pictures in a digital camera. Some may also have reached their shelf life, and though right out of the package may even have problems just powering startup of the camera. Digital cameras that use AA's for the most part should only be used with rechargeable NiMH batteries. If you read the camera's instruction manual concerning batteries, you may see the same recommendation.
Keep in mind rechargeable NiMH batteries will save you money in the long run over alkalines, AND they'll last for at least 100 pictures per charge (and probably many many more). You'll be very pleased with their performance, and may be angry with yourself for not buying them sooner. When at the store, look on the package for a power rating of at least 2500 mah.
Canon Powershot A510 black screen when taking photos
A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see the following for further info and a simple fix that may help:

Lens cap stuck
I was messing around with this today, ended up where it seemed in was working.
Power up, let lens out, then take out batteries. Pry off silver band patiently using fingernails. Then pry off overlying black plastic piece. There are four units underneath, pay attention to how these are put on, mine popped off, but it wasn't too hard to figure out how to put back together. There are pins and holes and kind of fits like a jigsaw. Once off clean with alcohol where you can.
Put batteries back in and open and close a few times. This will help understand movement where pins of lens cover pieces go. When putting these back on make sure camera is in off position.
The lens cover pieces need to be put on so that the pin portion has some resistance. Move one so that it drops in then push up to get other in place. Let them come together and hold these in place.
The two smaller pieces will close the cover. Put the hole of the closer piece over the pin. Then move slightly so you can retract spring with a small instrument and subsequently engages pin on closer. Place top black piece back on, then silver.
This worked for me, hope it does you also! Good luck.

You might have switched off the display by mistake, which is used as a power saving option and can be switched on by pressing the display button.
Can't format memory card in A510 Canon digital camera.
Have you used this card in the past? Is this a new card?
Is this card rated to be used with this camera. Some cameras can only support cards of certain sizes.
If the card is compatible, take the card to target or best buy and format it on a camera there and see if it works then put it back in your camera and see if it works after.
