This is one example,
http://www.priorityelectronics.com/product/NEC/Lavie_S/LS700J_OR_36DT3/MK3021GAS/A Harddrive's physical size is rated from it's Width. How wide across is it.
A Notebook PC harddrive is 2.5 inches across in width. (2 and a half inches)
A Desktop PC harddrive is 3.5 inches across in width.
1) You need a 2.5 harddrive.
There are two types of Harddrive technology used;
The older IDE (PATA), and the newer SATA.
The NEC LaVie S Notebook PC uses a Harddrive with the IDE (PATA) technology.
2) You need a 2.5 IDE (PATA) harddrive.
[ IDE (PATA),

The original harddrive amount size in GigaByte's was 20GB.
{Giga = Approximately 1 Billion
A Byte is considered to be 8 characters. Whether the characters are Numbers, Letters, or Symbols}
Do I know what the largest harddrive in GB's is that can be installed?
No.
I need the Exact model number from the bottom of the laptop.
NEC = Manufacturer
LaVie = Model Line
S = Model Series
The exact specific model number is on the bottom of the laptop. Usually in a white sticker.
This page denotes a few model numbers, I'll use them as examples,
http://www.priorityelectronics.com/product/NEC/Scroll down to the bold NEC Lavie S heading, and look at the model number examples.
With this information I can look to see what hardware is used, and possibly harddrive size limit.
