You have a short in there and that accounts for the tripping circuit breaker. If the insulation on the heating coil has gone that could be a good reason for the issue. Open it up and look for the short.

Humidifiers, depending on brand will spit out a little water as that is the Idea to get moisture into the air, but you can try not filing it so full, this one is steam so I would look into owners manual as to how to clean it , you may find that it has collected calcium deposits not allowing it to vaporize the water properly.

No salt, unless you had 0 steam - to stop water spit, throughly clean the water tank, just as clean as new. It will work like new if the tank is as clean as new! I dont know where the small particles of dirt come from, but trust me, I just went thru this with mine, it's got dirt in it!

Not much. Most people want to buy new medical equipment / environmental control equipment if the original price is under $50 or so. They fear a used piece will be dirty and transmit infection or, less severe but also disturbing, cigarette smoke smell or cat hair. Cleaning costs and time will consume the costs and doesn't justify the risk of buying used. Especially if they have no way to return it if it stops working (or never works).

Another alternative to vinegar is to use lemon juice. About 1 cup to a tank of water should do the trick. It smells much better than vinegar and also has the acid content to clean the vaporizer.

Seriously? In order to get steam you have to "BOIL" water.

Did you add the recommended amount of salt?

I have hard water as well and I wasn't getting steam. I put in a good tablespoon of salt and the steam started immediately. Try more than a pinch (if that's all you put in originally)

Clean the unti - and do not add salt. I live in a major hard water city...and was amazed at how much dirt the tank collected. I tried adding salt to to stop the spitting, which did make a lot more steam, but did NOT stop teh water spit. I also noticed, with salt added, water in tank would only last 4-6 hours, not the 18-24 hours it should. I just figured it out, and now mine works great again, and does not spit. I cleaned the water tank throughly, several rinses, then wiped out entire inside. If you want it to work like new, you have to keep your tank as clean as new. I am going to start filtering my water that I put in with a double pantyhose I made simply so there no more dirt ~ a clean tank will fix the problem, it did mine :)

You may need to clean the two electrodes. Dip the black part of the motor in water with vinegar for about 15-20 minutes and rinse. That should work.

This is considered normal. It's the residue left from the water vaporizing into steam. Since it's left behind in the chamber, you do not breathe it in. Other users have said that it helps keeping these minerals in the chamber and just adding water to mineralize the water in lieu of adding salt.

does point to being scaled up with limescale there may be a scale remover recommended by the manufacturers i would contact them.

The easiest ans simplest way to clean it, is too mix a 50/50 solution of White Vinegar & Bottled Distilled Water (enough to fill the tank) and fill the the tank with the solution. Allow it to set for 30 minutes, then turn the unit ON. Allow it to run, until the tank is half empty. Pour out the remaining solution and fill with the Bottled Distilled Water Turn the unit ON and run until the tank is almost empty. Following these instruction will remove all the lime and calcium build up in the unit.

Tip: Using bottled Distilled Water rather than Tap Water, will totally eliminate calcium and lime buildup.
