Do you mean you cannot physically open the drive door? There is usually a small pinhole above the CD/DVD opening. If you bend a paper clip straight and poke it into the hole, that should release the door.

cd or dvd drives and similar don't need any extra software, they always work instantly in windows, if the drive is not showing up, it could be another problem which I've written a solution for here. http://www.fixya.com/support/r548399-fix_non_working_cd_dvd_shows_in_device

Is this conected to the motherboard vis sata or (ide)pata?If sata did you put it in the correct port and if so is it enabled.Secondly if ide or pata is the port enabled in the bios or do you have a second device attached to it.If using ide pata one drive should be master or slave ,,, or cable select.
These are the answers why it might not work.The last answer is it died,but i think this is the least likely answer.

When you look at the cdrom driver connectors, the following are the right jumper setting for all CDROM drives.

Left - Cable Select
Middle - Slave
Right - Master

There should be a diagram on the drive indicating the jumper positions. Good luck!

Check you'r jumpers ei master slave. and all cables are hooked up right, power hook up are fully in. you may have to up date win xp. sp 2-3 so on. enter cotroll panel. system. hardware tab. device manager. look under dvd/cd-rom drivers if they are listed there 1st try to update the drivers. if that don't work then uninstall all of the dvd/cd roms listed there. then restart you'r computer. on the re start win xp install wis. shold find the roms and install them and update them. if that don't work you'll have to call the microsoft free help line. this is what they had me do when I had the same problem. you may in the end have to wipe and re install window, sorry to say. hope this helps you
