If this problem is not described in the troubleshooting section of the cameras's manual, then you need to contact Canon Customer Service, it's not a normal behavior, and probably is not something you can do yourself.

I can only guess that you are not using a charger that's designed for the battery. I have experienced the same problem.

It can happen if you are in the Auto-No Flash mode. Or if the flash release button is stuck. Contact customer service, and have a pro take a look at your camera.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). I don't think there will be an incompatibility issue. If your other lens(es) work well, your camera must be ok. But not only dirty contacts can cause trouble. If a very small dent is in one of the contacts of the camera, or one of the contacts from the lens is a bit to far pressed in, you also have a bad or not existing contact with the same error. In the lens also something can be wrong. I strongly suggest to try the lens on an other camera and see what that brings.If the error goos with the lens to the other camera, you know where to look. But I think only professionals can repair you lens if it is defect.

The soap is probably between the back light and the LCD itself, on one of the plastic Fresnel screens. You may be able to clean it off with Windex on a Q-tip. Remove back cover (can't give directions without knowing which model)

If you ligthly press the shutter button then the screen with the settings must appear. The same with the "Q" button.

Remove black side cover (two screws) and rear cover and check the rear circuit board for a missing screw in the lower right corner. Find screw and replace. If it did not short out the circuit you should see the function return. Other, send to Canon for circuit replacement

Try formatting the cards on your PC. Alternatively I would suggest that you reset your Firmware or if it is not on the latest version upgrade while you are at it - this should reset anything that potentially could have been scewed.

Make sure lens is set on AF and not M. Clean body and lens contacts with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol. Try multiple lenses to make sure it is not a problem with just one lens. Put the lens on M and turn the front and make sure it turns freely and is not stuck by impact/spillage etc. Push down on the release button and make sure you have two distinct 'pops' (release switch may be broken). Gently lift up mirror and make sure that the AF sub mirror also comes up properly. Impact can break the little plastic guide pin for the sub mirror so that it is not in the right position and the AF will not work. Also make sure that the spring that makes the sub mirror come up is in position (they come off). Can be on either the right or left side of the mirror depending upon the model.These are the steps I would take if you brought your camera into the shop I work at.

There is nothing that auto-focuses except the circuit in the body - all the motors, gears etc. are in the lenses. If this is a 18-55 lens then more than likely the long shaft gear has broken teeth - a very common problem.
