DELL SPEAKER SYSTEM STOPPED WORKING
Suggest you abandon the mini-phone jack connection - sounds like a wire is broken in that connector. Use the RCA stereo outputs from your TV into the Dell surround system. You may need a couple of adapter cables to make that work. Take photos of the connectors on the back of your TV and on the back of the Dell Surround system. Take those to an electronics store like Best Buy and ask for help there to get the cables you need (telling them that the mini-phone (headphone) plug is giving you trouble.

Dell 5650
What you need is a splitter and not an adapter. Forget the colors yellow, green, black. They are not relevant. The business end of those colors occur inside the box. Dell manufactured these "bass ackwards". You need a 3-way headphone splitter and that will solve your problem. I bought a RadioShack Headphone Splitter Cable model 42-2458. Hope this helps. Just plug into headphone outlet

My speakers keep fading in and out
I am having the same problem with mine. Tried re-installing the sound drivers but that didn't make a difference. Took out all the screws in back to see if there was a loose wire, but couldn't get the center speaker apart....

Can you get sound if you are missing the central speaker?
Self powered speakers are configured to get their voltage from a source outside the PC, so you'll need to replace the central unit that provides the power or replace the speaker system. As for a replacement you can Google the Brand Name and model of the speaker and you may find a source for a replacement that way.
Good luck.

How can I hook up the 5650 system to my lap top?
The laptop has one RT/Left mini port on the side or up front. You may require and adapter to a larger stereo plug if the Mini Adapter is too small for the speaker line input. If you have Two wires to the speakers and no Mini-Plug, you need Converter from Mini Plug to Right and Left Ports. Best you take it with you to RadioShack and they will match up the adapter you need then and teher.

Volume won't stay set
There have been many new things that have been introduced when Google bought Youtube, and I believe that one of them is that it resets the computers speaker volume all they way up, the best I can currently suggest is that you leave the computer volume up and turn the physical speaker volume down, and it should be fine.
Hope this has helped,

No sound coming from the rear speakers
I had the exact same problem and could not for the life of me figure it out. I literally just figured it out now, over two years later. If you plug your speakers into your computer using each separate plug (black, green, and yellow), use the adapter that should have come with the speakers set. I'm sure if you've had it long enough you may have lost it by now but luckily my pack-rat ways saved the day for me. Use the adapter so that you only need to plug into the green input and they work perfectly now. If that doesn't solve your problem... well I guess you're outta luck with me.
