Try reformatting the memory card on the camera. If this doesn't work try a new SD card.

Does the camera have parallax correction?
The Epson R-D1 uses automatic parallax correction. Just set the frame selector lever to match the focal length of the lens being used to automatically correct parallax.

How should I clean the camera?
To keep your camera operating at its best, you should clean it thoroughly several times a year. Before you perform any maintenance on the camera, be sure to read the Safety Instructions. Then follow these guidelines:
* Turn the camera off before cleaning.
* Use a clean, dry cloth to keep the camera free of dust.
* Do not use harsh or abrasive cleaners.
* If necessary, clean the battery contacts with a dry cloth.

What does the USER button do?
You can assign one of the following functions to the USER button: Delete, Lock, Magnify, Print, Settings (current settings), and Film. Delete is the default setting.
To change the setting:
1. Use the JOG dial to select Assign User Button in the Camera Settings menu, and press the ENTER button.
2. Use the JOG dial to select a function to be assigned, and press the ENTER button.

I have an old Epson
It's ancient, worthless and totally obsolete. Spare parts will be impossible to obtain. Repairs will be completely uneconomical if you have to pay for them in any way (parts or labour).
In short, you have absolutely nothing to lose by trying a DIY repair, and even if it fails (highly likely) you gain valuable experience for when you next attempt such a repair.
BTW: the Epson 850z is not an SLR. The optical viewfinder does not take it's image from the same lens used to take the picture.
