Nikon D90 Digital Camera Questions & Answers
Why does shutter error message appear when button pressed?
If the shutter has 100K operations then the camera may be due for a replacement (not worth repairing).
Please make sure you have a fully changed battery in the camera. If the camera does not have a battery icon anywhere showing a low or dead battery then you have a camera that should be sent to a Nikon Authorized service center. They can clean and repair your camera. They will; QUOTE the repair before you pay. All you are out is shipping costs.

D90 Motherboard
Assuming you could do this yourself (maybe finding the part on Ebay), unless it is a used part it requires Nikon proprietary software to initialize the new board and only Nikon has it. You can no long buy parts from Nikon as of July 13th (and neither can anyone else except for a few things like battery caps, and then only for current production cameras).

What is F EEon the LCD screen?
You're apparently using a lens with an aperture ring. Turn the ring to its smallest setting (largest f/number). If it has a lock, lock it. You can then control the aperture from the camera body, the same was as on a lens without an aperture ring.

Autofocus not working
Have you tried to see if you camera is running the latest firmware? If its not update it.
Nikon Teleconverter
You could probably use either a 1.4 x or a 2 x, depending on how much you wanted to increase the focal length of your lens. A 1.4 x would give you a range of 98-420, a 2 x would give you a range of 140-600.
Having said that, teleconverters are not usually recommended for use with zoom lenses, and you would lose one stop with the 1.4 x, two stops with the 2 x, thus necessitating longer exposures. Also, with the increase in focal length comes an increased probability of camera shake being more apparent, due to the increased magnification. In your position, I would attempt to get closer to the subject, using a teleconverter as a last resort if this is not possible.
