is the drive making any sounds, beeps, or sounds like clicking after revving up? Might need new hard drive, I had same laptop do the same thing, when it got to post, cursor of death= hard drive died. Also note that you need to replace it with a low GB drive, ATA or SATA not IDE. Try and get 80 - 120 gig if it does need replacing. For some reason I remember it wont run anything over 240G. If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Hi, Toshiba extended the warranty of the M35 till Nov. of this year for this same problem. If you just contact Toshiba support, they'll rplace the board no charge. I've had a few repaired. They only take a few days. Good luck,

Were you able to get the toshiba bios screen? Well, if you're able to get the toshiba splash screen it means that your laptop is okay, Your problem is connected to windows.

You can adjust screen settings with function key and other key on laptop. You can see contrast and brightness symbol on keyboard of laptop press FN key + that brightness key then adjust settings. Go into your BIOS when computer is first turning on press F2 or DEL to enter your computers BIOS look through the settings to find your HDD see it one shows up in your BIOS, then on the same page look to see if there is a cd/dvd drive listed as well, next if you have any flash drives or external HDD hooked to it remove them. After you have done these if your BIOS shows your hardware anyway. Power on you computer and see what happens. If you need more help, or come up with more information about your problem please reply. You are sure that the power is ok ? If so it might act like that because it is overheating, try using a compressed air bottle in all the venting hole of the laptop to try to clean it a bit

depending on the model, sometimes F11 is the OS recovery key for Toshibas, it's possible your hard drive could be going bad. if the laptop is under warranty I recommend contacting Toshiba. If out of warranty it's best to take the laptop to a local computer shop.
