such a complex topic and so little info!
to reach an open port you need to know a couple things
1) the ip address your trying to reach x.x.x.x
2) the port you will use :xxxxxx
and it can be put into a browser like so 71.233.23.40:8080
to make it so people can reach you is the fun and dangerous part!
things you will need:
1) your wan ip (google "what is my ip")
2) the specific device you are making available's lan ip (cmd - ipconfig /all works well on windows)
3) what port your supposed to open (i'm sure the documentation or program says somewhere)
log into your router and find the port forwarding and triggering section under advanced in a netgear (application and gaming in some others)
1)name it
2)put the number to open in twice
3)select protocol (ive usually used tcp... udp for file transfer sometimes)
4)fill in the rest of your lan ip
5)tick the box to enable and save settings
now there is a hole letting traffic on a certain port reach the named lan ip... OH, make certain that device has a static ip, if its ip changes you'll find headaches at inconvient hours.
hope i got you pointed the right way
If your wireless access suddenly requires a password, one of two things has happened...either you are inadvertently trying to connect to a neighbor's wireless router, or someone has modified your router. If you are certain it is your router you are attempting to connect to, and it is requiring a password you did not setup, your best bet is to perform a hard reset. There should be a reset button on the back of your router. You should press and hold this button for a few seconds. This will clear all setup information and return the router to factory setup. In order to setup your router from this point, you will need to connect directly to the router, perform whatever setup options you prefer, and then you should be able to connect wirelessly. It is highly recommended that you setup a password for wireless access. It is also recommended you change the admin password to prevent someone else from making unwanted modifications.
Most Netgear routers have a recessed button on the back or bottom panel, marked "Reset" or "Restore Factory Settings". Because the button is recessed, you will require a thin tool to press it. Most people use a straightened paperclip.
Power up the router, and wait for it to complete booting up, typically about one minute.
Press the Reset or Restore Factory Settings button until the test or power led starts blinking. This takes about 20 seconds. Release the button.
Wait for the router to reboot.
Log in with the default password.
If the reset was not successful, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting.
Unplug the router's power.
Press and hold the Reset button. While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
Select Wireless under the Configuration tab, then select Advanced from the side menu the beacon setting should be the 3rd setting listed. The default beacon setting should be good for any setup it might help to know why you want it changed.
Best option in this case (since it was once working), read and follow the instructions on the back of the router to hard reset the router (typically holding the little red reset button in for 15 seconds or more until the lights on the front flash, and so on)
