Have you tried moving the files onto your laptop and uncompressing them there?

Did you have Winrar (or any other copressing software) installed on the laptop before you went back to factory settings? Are the compressed files on the external drive in the .zip or .rar (or another) file format?

The computer repair stores have special software that might help and is worth considering because this is something you cannot do alone.

Used this software professionally for years, if it doesn't work, the alternative is very, very costly:

Just do a standard format. Since you will be writing over everything anyway. That is the simplest solution.

Please check the health of the storage attached to it through the software.

several things and solutions you can do.
if it's just an external hdd you can rip it to bits and take the drive out and use it as an internal drive, or take it to pieces and get an external hdd caddy for the size of the drive (3.5" or 2.5") they are cheap enough to buy.

If you checked with alternative cables, and on another computer, then your left with one option only. Removing the HDD from the casing.

If the HDD is still working but the case is not. You need to remove it from the case and connect it to a computer directly.

If once removed it is still not working you can try to put it in a sealed plastic bag and in a freezer for a day, the quickly try to connect it to a computer.
If it is still not working you only other solution is to send it to a specialized company that will open it and read the data directly from the plates. This is done in a sealed environment (think high tech dust free rooms with people coverd in white)
Thus it is expensive and usefull only id the data has a real value to you.
