Cannot connect to the internet using NetGear
I understand that you are not able to go online through your NETGEAR router (WGR614v8). I apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced. Since we are doing this online, it may require a few email exchanges before we can resolve the issue. Please be assured that I will do my best effort to help resolve your case in the least amount of time.
Regarding your concern, I would recommend you to please reset and reconfigure your router (MODEL NUMBER). It is in this context, please follow the procedure stated below to configure the router:
(I) RESET THE ROUTER:
At the back of the router you will find a small tiny hole (which has a small button inside it). Press the button with the help of a paper clip and hold it down for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, please release the button and power off the router for 5 seconds then power the router back.
(II) CONFIGURE THE ROUTER:
1. Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port of the router (isolated port).
2. Connect the computer to the router using any one of the 4 available (LAN) ports. Please make sure that THERE IS NO DIRECT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE MODEM AND THE COMPUTERS (either using Ethernet cable or USB cable).
3. Power off the modem and the router after making the connections.
4. Power on the modem and wait for the lights to come on, then power on the router.
5. Open the browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari).
6. Access the router settings, by typing 'www.routerlogin.net', 'www.routerlogin.com' or 'http://192.168.0.1' in the address bar.
7. When prompted for Username and Password please enter Username as 'admin' and Password as 'password' (please note that both Username and Password are case sensitive).
8. Click on 'Setup Wizard' (at the top of the list) from the left menu.
9. Select yes and click on next.
10. In case you get the message: 'You already have a valid Internet connection, do you still want to continue', click on 'YES'.
11. It should give you a 'Dynamic IP Detected'. Once you get 'Dynamic IP' click on Next.
12. On the next page, click on 'Apply'.
13. Once it has updated the settings click on 'Router Status' and check if there is any IP address under the Internet port.
14. If there is no IP address then please go back to 'Basic settings' from the left menu
15. Please select 'Use Computers MAC Address' from 'Router MAC Address' section and then click on 'Apply'.
16. Check for IP address again on the 'Router Status'. Once you get an IP address, please open up another browser window and try to access the Internet.
Check if you can go online on the computer hard wired to the router. Once you are able to go online. Please follow the instructions provided below to configure the wireless connection:
(III). LOGIN TO THE ROUTER:
1. On any wired computer (the computer should be connected to the router using an Ethernet cable), please open Internet Browser, like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari
2. Type in the address bar 'www.routerlogin.net', 'www.routerlogin.com' or 'http://192.168.1.1'.
3. When prompted for Username and Password, key in Username as 'admin' and Password as 'password'. Please note that, both Username and Password are case sensitive.
(IV). CONFIGURE THE WIRELESS SETTINGS OF THE ROUTER:
1. Click on ‘Wireless Settings’ under ‘Setup’ on the left hand column of the screen.
2. Under Network Name (SSID), type in any name.
3. Please select your region.
4. Please select the channel as '09' or '03'.
5. Under ‘Mode’, select the option as 'Auto 108 Mbps'.
6. Under security options, select WPA-PSK (TKIP).
7. Key in any alphanumeric passphrase that you would like to keep as password for wireless network and then click on ‘Apply’ (please note that the passphrase is case sensitive).
8. Click on Wireless Settings under Advanced on the left hand column of the screen.
9. You find two check boxes on the top, namely, “Enable Wireless router Radio” and “Enable SSID Broadcast”. Both of them should be checked and then click on ‘Apply’.
10. Click on ‘Setup Access List’. The check box that says ‘Turn Access Control On’ should be unchecked and then click on ‘Apply’.
(V). CONNECT THE WIRELESS COMPUTER (WINDOWS XP):
1. Click on 'Start' and then 'Run'.
2. Type in ‘ncpa.cpl’ and the click on ‘OK’.
3. Right-click on ‘Wireless Network Connection’ and click on ‘Properties'.
4. On top of the pop-up window, you should see a TAB named ‘Wireless Networks’. In case you do not see the same, please enable your Wireless Zero Configuration using Step (VI) given below.
5. Under wireless networks, you see a check box that says – ‘Use Windows To Configure My Wireless Network Settings’. This check box should be checked. On the bottom of the window, delete all wireless network names under 'PREFERRED NETWORKS' and then click on ‘OK’.
6. Right-click on Wireless Network Connection and click on ‘View Wireless Networks’.
7. Select your wireless network, and then click on ‘Connect’.
8. Key in your ‘passphrase’ in the pop-up box, reconfirm it and then click on ‘Connect’.
9. You should be connected to wireless network now.
(VI) ENABLE WIRELESS ZERO CONFIGURATION:
1. Click on 'Start' and then 'Run'.
2. Type in ‘services.msc’ and then click on ‘OK.
3. You get a window with all services present on the computer. Among the last five options, please find “Wireless Zero Configuration”.
4. Right-Click on the same and click on ‘Properties’.
5. In the middle of the pop-up window, select Start Up Type as ‘Automatic’ and then click on ‘Apply’.
6. Please click on ‘Start’ under Service Status and then click on ‘OK’.
Note:- If you have a wireless laptop and if you are unable to detect any of the wireless networks in the vicinity, please double-check that the wireless switch on the laptop is turned on. Wireless switch on the laptop may be a physical switch by the sides or may be a combination of keys from the keyboard. Please look for laptop manual or contact manufacturer of the laptop in case of any confusion regarding this.
