Needs to know more about MTU size changes

Changing the MTU size to any "small" value is a bad idea -- compare it to running to the corner store every time that you need to take anything (milk, ice-cube) out of your refrigerator -- the "time" to go back-and-forth to the store (or the Internet) will be excessive, and "slow" down your productivity.

Sending emails

There are numerous ports used and methods to send and recieve e-mail my setup uses the pop / smtp method where I believe the default ports are 110 / 25 however my ISP uses two other ports. Routers with port filtering enabled may allow 110 and 25 by default but are unlikely to permit other ports chosen by your or my ISP. The riskier change is to disable all port filtering. The safer option would be to open the ports required by your ISP (as well as closing the default ports that are unused).

In order to achieve this we will need to determine the ports you utilize for e-mail.

We will need to be able to access the router for configuration with a web browser.

A second option is that your computer has a firewall blocking your e-mail ports. However if this were true your e-mail would never work. The process is similar to the router in that the required ports would need to be open or the e-mail program given permission to access the internet in your computer's firewall program.

This could be a lengthy process determining your e-mail client accessing the configuration to determine the ports used. Determining if the router and/or the internal firewall are the issue and making the appropriate changes to one or both as determined necessary. If you, your neighbor or a friend is knowledgeable in these areas it may be easier to have them assist than to do this over the web.

If you wish for me to attempt to assist further I need to know what your e-mail program is? Do you have a firewall or internet security / anti virus product on your computer? What is it's name? Please include the model number of your belkin router.

Cannot Send Email

This may be a problem with MTU size, particularly if left at the default setting. See http://www.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?thid=102096&prdid=252247 for details, or contact your ISP to find what settings they prefer.

MTU

MTU, Partial Loss of Internet Connection, and Performance MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) is the largest packet a network device transmits. The best MTU setting for NETGEAR equipment is often just the default value. MTU is sometimes presented as something that can be easily changed to improve performance, but in practice this may cause problems. Leave MTU unchanged unless one of these situations applies: 1. You have problems connecting to your ISP or other Internet service, and their technical support (or NETGEAR's) recommends changing MTU. For example, these services may require an MTU change: * Yahoo email * MSN * AOL's DSL service 2. You use VPN, and have severe performance problems. 3. You used a program to "optimize" MTU for performance reasons, and now you have connectivity or performance problems. * An easy solution to most problems is to change MTU to 1400. * If you are willing to experiment, gradually reduce MTU as described in "Details of MTU", below. How to Change a Computer's MTU Size Note: If you change MTU on one computer, it is likely you will want to change it on your other computers, switches, and routers, as well. Instructions for changing MTU on other NETGEAR devices is found in the Reference Manuals. The third party Dr. TCP software can be used to change the MTU setting. 1. Download it from this link, choosing the zip file or the exe file at the top of the page. 2. Run the utility. 3. In the Adapter Settings pull down, select the Ethernet driver and adapter used to connect with the network. 4. In the MTU box, type the MTU size you are trying. 5. Click in any other box, without changing the data there. 6. Click Save. 7. Click Exit. 8. Restart the computer. Details About MTU A packet sent to a device larger than its MTU is broken into pieces. Ideally, MTU would be set to the same ? large ? value on all your computers, routers and switches, as well as on all the parts of the Internet that you access. But you cannot control the MTU on the Internet, and in practice the optimum MTU size on your LAN is related to your hardware, software, wireless interference, etc. * Tweaking MTU size may work well in one situation, but cause performance and connection problems in others. * When network devices with different MTU settings communicate, packets are fragmented to accommodate the one with the smallest MTU. * Windows XP sets MTU automatically, that is, it optimizes computer MTU for you. This Microsoft article explains resolving lack of connection to a broadband ISP using Windows XP: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/ppoe.mspx * Once a network device fragments a packet, the data stays fragmented until arriving at the destination computer. Setting MTU size is a process of trial-and-error: start with the maximum value of 1500, then reduce the size until the problem goes away. Using one of these values is likely to solve problems caused by MTU size: * 1500. The largest Ethernet packet size; it is also the default value. This is the typical setting for non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections. The default value for NETGEAR routers, adapters and switches. * 1492. The size PPPoE prefers. * 1472. Maximum size to use for pinging. (Bigger packets are fragmented.) * 1468. The size DHCP prefers. * 1460. Usable by AOL if you don't have large email attachments, etc. * 1430. The size VPN and PPTP prefer. * 1400. Maximum size for AOL DSL. * 576. Typical value to connect to dial-up ISPs.

Problems with the Web Configuration Screen

# The computer may not have received an IP address. Restart it to have an IP dynamically assigned (or run "winipcfg" in Windows ME or earlier, or "ipconfig" utility in Windows NT), and then launch the browser. # You are running a software firewall on your computer. Disable it while accessing the router's configuration. Also you should realize that running a firewall in conjunction with a NETGEAR firewall may cause other problems. We recommend turning off software firewalls. # Remove proxy settings on your Internet browser. # Remove the dial-up settings on your browser.

Logging Does Not Work

In some circumstances NETGEAR routers check to ensure the source and destination of email messages are not the same address. If this happens, the router's logging messages are discarded. (The Reference Manual is not clear on this.) An easy way to solve this is to choose a different email server for the router's "Send to This E-mail Address" field. So if "Your Outgoing Mail Server" is mail.myisp.com (as shown in the manual) then DO NOT use [email protected] for the "Send to This E-mail Address" field. Instead, use an email account you have on another server, such as hotmail. E.g., make the send field [email protected] other way to solve this is to explicitly open the ports for SMTP and POP, 110 and 25. By default, these ports are closed on NETGEAR routers. (Other, non-NETGEAR related email problems are also solved by opening these ports.)

Cannot Send or Receive Email

This may happen if your Internet connection uses dynamic DNS. Change the email application to use a fully qualified domain name for the login. A fully qualified name is composed of both the host and domain. Correct: yourusername.aol.com Incorrect: yourusername The correct fully qualified name can also be derived by putting your router's username and domain name together as they appear on the router's setup screens. E.g., if username = sueandfred, and domain name = aol.com, then the fully qualified name = sueandfred.aol.com. (Note the dot between the username and domain.)

Belkin f9k1106v1 range extender not connecting

QUICK TIP: When finding a location for your range extender, it is best to place it within the same room as the computer. You can also use https://192.168.206.1 to access the range extender's web-based setup page. Step 1: Place the range extender in an area where the Wi-Fi signal of your router is strong, but near where you want to establish your extended network. Step 2: Plug in the power supply of the range extender and make sure that it is powered ON. Shortly, its light will begin to flash blue and orange. Step 3: Place your computer near the range extender. Also, make sure your computer is not wired to any other network devices. Step 4: Connect your computer to the range extender by opening the list of Wi-Fi networks and selecting Belkin.setup. Confirm that the list shows it's connected. Step 5: Open a web browser, enter https://belkin.range into the Address bar, and follow the on-screen instructions. Don't forget to type "http". Once the setup for your range extender is complete, you may connect the computer to its Wi-Fi.
