As a security check, you can have an outside service do a port scan on your IP address to see which ports your router is leaving open.
Some ports may appear in the scan, but be shown as "closed". That means that the router is acknowledging the request for these ports, but refusing the connection. Some users prefer to have no response at all from the router, so that there appears to be no device at the IP address. This is called "stealth mode".
The solution is to forward the ports in question to a non-existant computer on your LAN. Choose a local IP address that you will not use for any device in your network, such as 192.168.0.199. Then go to the port forwarding menu of your router and forward those ports to that address. Since there is no device at that address, there will be no response.
A popular site for having your ports scanned is the Gibson Research site at http://www.grc.com . Select the ShieldsUP test.
Stealth mode is not available on other NETGEAR routers.
Here are three ways to find this information:
1. Within the browser interface of the Router, enter Maintenance and the WAN PORT is your dynamic address assigned by your ISP.
2. Enter the telnet interface (start-run-telnet 192.168.0.1-and enter password when prompted) of your Router and enter menu 24.1 (System Maintenance-Status) and the dynamic address is listed as the WAN IP address.
3. Enter the Serial Manager (except the RP114) of the Router and enter menu 24.1 (System Maintenance-Status) and the dynamic address is listed as the WAN IP address.
To Enable Port Forwarding for MR314 or RP114
1. Type the router's address in an Internet browser's address bar. (By default the router's address is 192.168.0.1).
2. Enter the router's username and password.
3. Click Advanced > Ports on the left menu bar.
4. Enter the first port number in an unused Start Port box.
5. If only one port number is to be forwarded, enter the same number in End Port. To specify a range of ports, enter the last port to be forwarded in the End Port box.
6. Enter the IP address of your local server in the Server IP Address box.
7. Click Apply.
