Sounds like the belt might be slipping prematurely. I'd try cleaning the belt and all the pulleys with an alcohol based solvent or rubbing alcohol (clear) to remove any excess oils that might cause slippage and see if that helps Is there any type of belt tension adjustment? If so, also try tightening the belt.. If the problem persists, you probably need to replace the belt.

If this helps, after the churning stops, remove the paddles and cover the top with plastic wrap or wax paper and allow the mixture to "firm up" in the ice bucket nother 10-15 mnutes, and then enjoy a great old-fashioned treat!

No make and model provided but.... Of course it isn't safe to eat!! It is likely a mixture of oil, broken seal dust and a little metal/rust creamed with a drop of condensation. 50 years as as a chef and I wouldn't serve that or eat it. Fix it or thrown the machine away! These machines are normally 20 years old and get used 3 times every 2 years.

If it was fine before stored away, then either the power is not getting to the machine, (rodent damage or corroded contacts) or there is a control fault.
