The lead and transformer are over heating and not

The lead overheating is a bad sign.

Looking for a replacement I found on eBay Three items

This seems to be the going rate for the power adapter.
The whole new drive, with power adapter looks more attractive than the power adapter with the expensive shipping.

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

Sounds like a HDD's read/write head failure. Hope you have backup of the contents of that hard drive as there might not be any possibility to get them back without a good backup or sending the hard drive to a data recovery specialist (which is a too expensive solution).

I can not get access to my smartdisk crossfire usb

> would be devastating to lose this info

The horse has left the barn. You should have planned for this contingency.

Your only hope is to search online for a professional Data Recovery Service. They try to repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files onto a new disk-drive. Not inexpensive, of course, but the alternative, namely to "forfeit" your files, is more expensive.

Smartdisk 160GB Crossfire hard drive

I had this same problem. One option is to open the smartdisk up. It should have a seagate ata drive inside. Attach it to a computer as a slave drive. Your dive will appear as a secondary drive on your computer. you should be able to get all your files off the drive. If your worried about voiding your computers warranty you can buy a usb adapter to make the drive act as an external drive. I highly recommend never using this drive again. I used it as my main hard drive and it fried on me. If you plan on getting rid of this drive let me. I need the circuit board to get my music files and portfolio off my failed drive. Thank you.

Crossfire 160GB

There is a chance that the data may still be intact on the hard drive inside your crossfire. I have special diagnostic hard drive cables and software that can be used to retrieve the data from the actual hard drive But there are no guarantees. I will see what I can do for you because I know what it's like to have a drive failure. I fix things for people on this site for a hobby so there will be no charge for my services. If you want me to attempt a restoration pack up your Crossfire in a ridged box with plenty of padding and mail it to me. Make sure you include the power adapter and a postage label for the return trip. As you can see from my reviews I am quite good at what I do.
If you would like to contact me for further details about the procedures I will employ feel free to give me a call at 607 216 4051, that is the number to my laptop. You can also contact me by E-mail: [email protected] If you send me your number I will call you so you won't even have a toll call. I can usually restore all the data from a failed drive, but once again there are not guarantees. The only thing you will be out is a couple bucks postage so it is not something to worry about. In the event I can make a full recovery we will have to come to a point where we will decide how you want the data returned depending on the amount of data retrieved. I can upload the data to my dedicated server and you can download it from there. I can load the data on a spare removable drive and you can return it to me, or you can just reimburse me for the drive if you want to keep the whole working unit. I have a 160 E-IDE drive I can throw in a new mad dog external HD case for roughly 70 bucks ($20 for the new case and $50 for the drive itself). Hopefully I can repair the original controller in the Crossfire and just mail it back fully functioning again. If you need to pay for the spare unit I except paypal so if you are not happy in anyway they will just refund you money without any questions. I will even trust you for the payment until after you receive the drive and fully test it and retrieve your data. If you do not want to purchase the drive you can just mail it back to me after you load your restored data to your own device. All I ask is a thank you and a fixya rating. My main payment is the joy I get restoring data for people that thought it was gone forever. I mastered the skill of data recovery after losing a 500GB external loaded with 4 months of work. I actually went into shock for a few days. Ever since then I keep backups of all my data off site on the server, In house, and mission critical data is backed up to permanent DVD. Whatever you do, don't try anything else at this point it will only make things worse. Hope to hear from you soon.

Vista drivers for smartdisk

A few things to check but assumes USB for other interfaces similar steps may be followed

1. ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer.

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply (Dont use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating eg. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly)

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues carry on reading.

Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select computer management.

Now select Disk Management and expand the window.

Your drive should be listed here (if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding)

If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click tools and then error checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then start.

This will attempt to fix any errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.

If you drive was listed ut did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. when it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.
