Check If the problem is coming from the router

Every phone you want to to connect to the net, you have to setup for that. You have to set up the WiFi, the cell connection, from your provider and you have to give in what the phone should use. Cell or WiFi if both are available. (best is WiFi, to save your costs). Check if everything is setup as it should be. Plugging in a sim is not enough.

Did you try holding the 1 button down until it connects to your voicemail? You can set your voicemail up from there.

after getting an update, make sure u update this first then wait to do another activities. May be the memory consumption of the update are too much and they need a greater connectivity options like wifi. See if your update nedds wifi connection.

It sounds like feedback to me. That happens on my phone once in a while too. Usually I hang up and call the number back and the works for me. If it happens all the time to you I think you should switch out your phone. Good luck!

Absolutely does reduce battery life. If it's a smart phone there are apps out there that may use less power than you are using now to see the time.

It doesn't sound too good for your phone. If it's an iPhone you can try to restore it. It sounds like it's just broke and time to get a new phone.
