Upon connecting the samsung G2

Many errors in Windows are caused by corrupt files. Those files could have become corrupt because of errors on your hard drive. The Check Disk tool checks for errors and attempts to fix any it finds.
Warning: Use Check Disk at your own risk. On rare occasions I've experienced problems when using check disk in Windows Vista. Here are a few things to watch out for:
If you run check disk and your computer has to be restarted to scan your computer and your computer hangs at a black screen when it boots up, do the following: Turn the computer off and back on and immediately start pressing F8 on your keyboard repeatedly. A black screen with different boot options will appear. Select to use the Last known good configuration (advanced) boot option.
Never stop check disk once it has started. It could take hours to days to scan your hard drive depending on its size. How-to Use Check Disk Using the Graphical User Interface (GUI)
Open the Start Menu and click Computer. Right-click the drive you want to perform a check disk on and select Properties. Click the Tools tab in the drive Properties window.

Click Check Now under error checking. To perform a complete check of your hard drive for errors check off both options in the check disk window that pops up.

Click the Start button to start the process. If you are trying to check a hard drive that has open files you'll get a message similar to the one shown below.

Click Schedule disk check. Disk check can't check a hard drive that has open files. Your computer will reboot and check the disk before Windows Vista boots up. If you want to cancel the scheduled disk check for any reason, check out this guide.
Using the Command Line Interface
Check Disk can also be run using the command line (DOS) prompt.
Open the command prompt with administrative privileges by typing cmd in the search box in the Start Menu and right-click cmd.exe in the search results and then select Run as Administrator. Type chkdsk followed by one or a combination of switches listed below in the command prompt. If you run the check disk (chkdsk) command from the command prompt by typing just chkdsk check disk will run in read only mode. All it does is check for errors. It will not fix any errors it finds unless told to do so. This is done by adding switches when typing chkdsk in the command prompt.
A switch looks something like chkdsk /F. Notice the switch /F after the chkdsk command.
Below is a list of most of the switches used with the check disk command. You can use one or a combination of switches with the check disk command.
D: If you want check disk to scan a drive other than the C: drive, add the drive letter after chkdsk to tell it to scan that drive. If the drive is called X: on your computer it would look like chkdsk X:.
/F: The /F switch is the most common of the chkdsk switches. It tells chkdsk to fix any errors it finds. Chkdsk can't fix errors on a disk that has open files. If chkdsk asks you if you want to check the drive next time Windows Vista boots or dismount the drive choose to check the drive next time Windows Vista boots. Never choose to dismount the drive. That option should only be used by a professional.
/R: The /R switch tells chkdsk to attempt to recover any bad sectors of the hard drive if any are found. A bad sector is a spot on the hard drive that can't hold saved data anymore.
/I: The /I switch tells chkdsk to perform a less detailed but faster disk check.
/C: The /C switch tells chkdsk to skip the checking of cycles within a folder structure which reduces the scan time. Don't ask me what this means.
An example of an exhaustive disk check using the command line interface is:
chkdsk D: /F /R
The check disk command shown above will fix any errors it finds and also attempt to recover bad sectors of the D: drive if any are found.
If all else fails, try 3rd party tool SpinRite.

Have a Samsung G2 640GB

Hello,
You might try plugging it into another USB port, then go into the control panel / administrative tools / Computer Management. If you see the Disk Name / Drive Letter in there, try right clicking it and selecting Properties from the menu. Click the Tools tab and press the button for check disk for errors. Make sure the check box is selected that says Automatically Fix File System Errors. Press ok and let it do its magic. If it finds any errors that could cause the drive to become unusable, it will attempt to fix it.
If you can't get that far, you might try plugging it into another computer if you have one. If that still doesn't work, you may have a failed device. It may be possible to recover the data on it but at a premium price with less then 40% chance of success. (It all depends if its a main board crash, head crash or physical damage to the platters)
Regards, Chris

I've been using my windows

Were those files and folders something like System Volume Information, System Restore, Recycle Bin, and Desktop.ini? If yes then these are the folders that store the data about what is in the NTFS partition - deleting them makes the partition unreadable.
To recover your files from it you must install this program in a Windows pc
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/EASEUS-Data-Recovery-Wizard-Free-Edition.shtml
and run it. A better but paid program

I need to upgrade my firmware for my samsung hm501IX hard disk drive.

You have more of problem than firmware. Check your power supply, all connections, switches, to make sure the drive can power up. If they are good, the drive is dead. Not much chance of fixing it. An old trick, that rarely works, is to put the drive in a freezer overnight. If the spindle bearings are what went bad, the cold may tighten everything up enough to where you can start the drive and transfer your files off of it. But do it fast!

I have a problem with my external harddrive. when plugged in it takes too long too read and when I transfer files from or too the harddrive it takes up to one day. sometimes the files is not even as b

Are you plugging directly into the computer or using a USB Hub. Cheaper USB hubs have awful data throughput. I have one that I tried to plug a sd card reader into and it would take ten minutes for a 60 megabyte file. Connect directly to a port. Or download Samsung diagnostics and make sure that the drive is in proper working order. Verifying The Hard Disk Drive Is Working Normally

Samsung external hard drive

!! You have failed to provide a detailed problem. !! External hard drives are plug-and-play devices used to store music, video and data files. Once the drive is connected, the computer checks its systems for the appropriate drivers, loads them, and the external drive is ready to use. If the computer does not recognize the external drive, plug it into another computer to ensure the drive is not corrupted. If the drive is good, a few simple steps should help re-enable the drive for use. Switch the power button to "off." Disconnect the power cord from any extension cords or power strip, then re-seat the power cord into the hard drive. Connect the cord directly into an outlet and power up the drive. If the drive is powered and still not working, check the data cable. Power down the hard drive and disconnect the data cable from the computer. Wait 30 seconds to one minute. Reconnect the data cable and power up the drive. If the drive is not detected, power down the hard drive and connect the cable to a different port. Power up the drive. If the drive is detected but not working, check for a missing driver. Click on the "Start" button, right-click "Computer" and select "Manage." Enter your administrator password if requested. Select "Device Manager" and double-click "Disk Drives." Right-click the yellow exclamation point and install the missing driver. Close the Device Manager. If the drive is detected but not working check to ensure it has an assigned drive letter. Disconnect all devices connected by USB cables from the computer. Reconnect the drive's data and USB power cables directly into the computer. Click on the "Start" button, right-click "Computer" and select "Manage." Enter your administrator password if requested. Click on "Disk Management," right-click the external hard drive, click "change drive letter and path," and click "Add." Assign a drive letter. Avoid using A, B or C (C is usually assigned to the computer's internal hard drive). Click "OK" close the window. If the drive is detected but not working, check whether the drive is in sleep mode. Disconnect all devices connected by USB cables from the computer. Reconnect the drive's data and USB power cables directly into the computer. Click the "Start" button, right-click "Computer" and select "Manage." Enter your administrator password if requested. Select "Device Manager" and double-click "Universal Serial Bus Controllers." Double-click the first instance of "USB Root Hub" or "Root Hub." Check for the hard drive. If the drive is not visible, move to the next instance of "USB Root Hub." Continue checking each instance until the hard drive is located. Once located, click the "Power Management" tab and uncheck the "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" box, click "OK," then close the Device Manager. Power the computer down, wait 30 seconds to one minute, and power the computer back up to ensure the drive is detected.

I have an external samsung

use asoftech data recovery program to scan your external hard drive and then recover lost files. you can find it from facebookhttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Asoftech-Data-Recovery/290956907592436?sk=infoThis software scans all storage space on external hard drive and then join pieces together to recover files. So even virus affected your file table, and put virus to boot sector, the program can still be used to recover your files. Asoftech data recovery software will recover deleted files emptied from the Windows Recycle Bin, or lost due to the format or corruption of a hard drive, virus or Trojan infection, unexpected system shutdown or software failure.

My samsung G2 cant read, it ask to be formatted but it cant be completed n propreties shows 0 used space, 0 free space

Most likely the hd is bad. If you want to know for sure purchase a usb enclosure, break open your drive case and put the hd in the enclosure. That will tell you if it's the hd or the circuitry of your case.

Problem with Samsung G2 Portable External

Click on Start, then RIGHT-click on My Computer, click on Manage. In the left pane expand Storage if necessary and click on Disk Management. Look in the LOWER RIGHT pane and scroll through all the hardware devices it shows there.

Do you see that external drive there?

If not, you have a hardware problem.

IF you can see the unit in Disk Management's lower right pane, look at the main block which has info on it. It will show a Volume Name like My Disk or something, a Windows letter name like E, a size, a File System like NTFS, and a status. What are those?

If it simply has no letter name you can assign one by right-clicking on it.

If its File System is shown as "RAW", you have a little corrupted info in the disk control files. It may ask if you want to Format the disk and you are right to NOT do that.

3. Does it display the same info if you connect it to another PC?

4. IF the unit lights up but does not show anywhere as a valid piece of hardware, it is still possible that the HDD inside it is OK with good data, and the problem is with the case - its power supply or communication interface chips.

If that is the case, a simple way to check is to open the external case , uninstall the HDD unit inside, then install it temporarily in a desktop PC.

BUT your external unit MAY be one designed for use with laptops, and those have slightly different connectors on the, you would need an adapter to make the connections to the desktop machine.

But if you can do that, a good HDD will just show up like any other installed HDD. If that happens you can look more closely at the empty case as the culprit.

hope this helps
