If all you have is a green and a brown and they don't tell you which is which, it won't matter. All you are doing is completing a circuit and the light isn't picky. I would use the brown as positive though. The only way it might make a difference is if the light itself has a ground wire. If this is the case, use an ohms meter and touch the end of the brown wire to ground and if it is open, your ok.

On an outboard, you can disconnect the linkages, verify that the engine is in neutral, then adjust the linkages to fit. Then adjust the slack with the same amount of turns on the adjusters.
