Audiovox D1708 Portable DVD Player Questions & Answers
Disc will not spin
Make sure the connections are seated properly. Dirty disk? Older device, has it ever worked? The laser in the device may have malfunctioned. If this is the case, replace the device. New device? Go to manufacturer.
I place dvd disc in. I close the cover then in
I would advise you first to clean the laser / lens with a clean cotton bud moistened with alcohol.
To be honest with you, this would be the first remedy for a user before having this unit repaired by a certified technician.
You will need to open the cover of your device. You will find the
mechanical loading disc. The one where disc is loaded. In the middle of the
mechanical loading you will find a spindle motor and beside this is a
small glass illuminating red when the unit is on, this is the lens.
Clean it with a cotton bud moistened with alcohol.
I have great sound on my Audiovox portable dvd
- Check that the A/V IN/OUT Switch on the side of the player is set to the OUT position.
- Check the small switch near the hinge at the back of the unit, if
one is installed there. It turns off the LCD screen when the panel is
closed. This switch sometimes sticks in the down position and the screen
remains off. When the screen is opened, the switch is supposed to pop
up. If it is still in the down position, try to free it with the ends of
a toothpick or paper clip.
- If both switches are correctly set and the screen remains blank, the
unit should be sent to Audiovox for service.
Keeps telling me no disc
Hi Tina,
Try these basic steps below to solve your problem.
You should prepare tools and test instrument like multimeter. If you can't do it yourself I would advice you to find a friend that can perform the steps below.
Assuming that the disc is good.
1.Clean the lens. -
Sometimes because of dust the lens can't read any disc. Try clean the lens by
soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this.
2.Replace the ribbon - Check
the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch,
damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the
disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps
above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little
knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.
3.Check the motor - Check
the motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the
ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading
should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad
motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin. You may visit the link http://www.fixya.com/support/r7833671-change_defective_motor_portable_dvd for more info.
Hint : 50% of my
repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor
then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to
check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should
be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is
too far or too close.
Ifyou already cleaned the lens, and confirmed that
the ribbon is good as well as the motor then I've advice you to send it to
repair shop because the next step should be done with an expert because it is
quite technical diagnosing the fault between the pick-up lens and the main
board.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.
Screen brightness is almost non-existent any
Not sure about that particular model, but most have some sort of brightness control. This may be a menu item or perhaps some sort of switch or slider control on the case. If not, would bet that the backlight is dimming and there is no way to replace it.
In house adapter was lost on trip.could you lrt us
Hi, W/D here.
The easiest way to get one quickly is to take your DVD player (and manual, if you have it) to Radio Shack or an electronics sales and parts type store. They have a wide variety of generic replacements and can match one up to your unit. The cost is close to the same or less than ordering one from the manufacturer, and you won't have to wait to get it.
Best regards, --W/D--
My DVD player says No
It needs a laser. Those commonly go bad.If it is not warrantied,I would say probably $100+ to fix it.Here is a link to a place I worked at once.Call the consumer electronics division and ask about a price to change the laser in your make/model.If they say to just send it in and we'll see,try another electronics repair shop.Any good shop will normally give you an estimate for a specific request by you, regardless of your electronic knowledge.Good luck,Greg
If you need help with finding another shop, you can write here and I will get an autolink to what you posted.

My dvd player works but just keeps saying
hello,
the reason your dvd palyer keeps saying loading without working is that the laser or lens is weak or dirty.
the solution is for youto
1. use a lens cleaner to clean the lens,
2. replace the lens,
to replace the lens,
1.get a replacement lens,
2. unscrew the player from underneath,
3. carefully move the board that you will see, it is like a panel,
4. gently unscrew and remove the lens, and replace it with the new lens you got for replacement.
5. carefully place the panel or board back,
6. couple it back together,
test with a DVD disc.
take care
Can this be fixed?
i have an audiovox dvd player model D1718 . i put the disc in and it says it is loading but then comes up no disc . how can i fix this problem?
MY BATTERY WONT CHARGE
you can clean first the battery terminal or the copper pins before you purchase new battery.
No picture
try to re-solder the inverter transformer near the lcd.
My audiovox portable dvd player model # D1708 is
Probably the spindle motor is defective. Most of the times this is the major couse of htis problem.
The collectors of the motor became internally stuck with dirt.
You can check this by measuring the impedance of the motor by disconnecting the motor and measure the resistance of the motor with an Ohm-meter.(multimeter) . Itshould read somewhere in the 8-14 ohms range. when turning the motor the slightes bit, verry verry slowly (still measuring..) you should always read the same resistance. Only fluctuating a bit when turning but when stopping the turning the resistance should be the same. If not and you measure different value, then the collectors are polluted / filthy.
The answer to this is to either replace the motor, or (takes some more effort and precision) take the motor apart and clean the collectors carefully. THat is a difficult yob but I do this all the time when no new motors are available.
Hope this helps...
Can i make an internal dvd drive into a dvd player
Not directly. The interface from a DVD drive is radically different than the input of any TV. Also, there are no direct control (play, pause, skip, eject, etc.) interfaces from internal DVD drives, either.
The closest you could come is to put the drive in a PC that has TV Out functionality. Such a PC can be built very cheaply, however. Such video cards, most are made by ATI can be purchased on eBay for less than $20.
I hope this helps.
How can i get a disc to play, it says no disc?
might need to update the driver for your disc drive. Should be able to get it from the audiovox website. Is this a blank disc? It might actually be blank. You can usually tell by looking at the bottom of the disc and looking for data circles.
