Cobra 19 Ultra II CB Radio - Page 2 Questions & Answers
I have a totally dead unit now. Was getting the
bytrying to get it to work, by plugging it I. and turn.ING it on is probably causing more damage. if the fuse is blowing on it the polarity protection. diode is shot. the happen.s fron hooking the power wires up backwards. that's a no no.
inside the radio look for D10. its a thick black diode. it is probably burnt but not always. take note of what dirction the white band on the diode is facing. get an N10014 from radio shack and replace it using a soldering iron. be sure to put it in so the white band is facing the right way. same as the original.
if it still does not work, you ha e cause further damage by trying to get it to work and the radio needs a tech. but honestly this is an I.expensive radio, and would prolly be cheaper to replace.
be careful of the polarity.
Audio transmission trouble
hello please check mic wireing as it enters the radio could have a short there also open mic and get some switch oil spray lightly into the switch
Cobra 19 ultra3 not getting out
many factors here what is your swr on your antenna can you hear on receive? does it transmitt but you can't contact anybody need to know this to help you.
What mods can i do
tune up, swing mod, talkback, any thing that can be done to a cobra 25 ltd can be done to any 40ch cb.. just add a power mic$17.99 or a good echo mic will make a huge difference.
I Have A Cobra 19dx
check the swr's on the antenna. all shops should do it for free just to check them. WE DO here in texas.. but if antenna isn't install properly then it may be high swr causing short distance.
What type of antenna should
Six foot stainless steal will all ways be the best. But you'll have to make hole in your vehicle.
Magnet type I use is a Wilson 1000 brand get it you'll love it. You probably will not have to adjust your SWR.
Enjoy,
Mike.
I have a cobra 19
Hi danimal, my name is John. Welcome to FixYa. Try a different mic. that fits the radio. Then if you have further problem, let me know. Thanks for choosing FixYa. Happy holidays........John
Can a 19 ultra power
Yes it can, but it requires the addition of some components. It isn't really a straight forward install. It needs some reworking. In my opinion, not worth the trouble.
Sounds like you want to run a linear amplifier. If you really want to run an amp, get a better radio to do it. There really is no other reason to lower the dead key that low. Also, 1 watt might be too low. May not drive the amp well.
If you just want to make the radio swing, 1 watt is way way too low. You will have barely any carrier and the radio will sound like ****. That radio stock dead keys 2.5 watts. That's perfect for swing. Now you just need to have more modulation. Find DM1 and unsolder 1 leg and pull it out of the board. Now you will have full modulation. You will deadkey 2.5 and swing to about 15 watts.
If you want to run an amp, get a good radio. If you like cobra, get a cobra 29. They are fairly cheap, and sound amazing. As well it is real easy to lower the dead key in that radio.
I have a Cobra 19 plus that doesn't turn on what
You have hooked your power wire up backwards at some point and blown the polarity protection diodes.
This requires opening the radio and using a soldering iron to remove and replace the blown diode.
You will need:
1. Soldering Iron
2. Solder
3. De-soldering braid
4. N1004 diode or better.
5. Phillips head screw driver.
Using the phillips head screw driver to take the bottom cover of the radio off being careful of the speaker wires. Using the soldering iron, heat the solder on the tabs of the speaker and pull off the wires. No need to use the de-soldering braid to remove the solder. You should do this to make it easier to handle the radio, and to avoid damage to the speaker or wires etc.
Now take the cover off the top of the radio. This will reveal the "Trace" side of the board. This is where all of the components are soldered to the board.
Now flip it to the other side where you can see all of the components and wires etc. Look at the back right of the radio by where the power socket is. Look for D10. its a big black diode. It will most likely be black and burnt. Some times it may not be.
Here is the tricky part. You need to locate the points at which this component marked D10 is soldered to the trace side of the board. Some times you can use a bright light and look at the trace side of the board while the light shines on the other side to locate the part.
Once you have located the points at which the diode is soldered too, do not de-solder it yet. Make note of which side of the diode the white band is on. This is important, putting the diode in with the wrong polarity will make the radio not work.
After you take note of the white band you may now use the de-soldering braid to remove the solder from the trace side of the board. To do this, place the braid over the solder point. put the tip of the soldering iron on the braid and press it down to the solder point. You will see it **** the solder into the braid.
Once the solder is off both solder point, flip the radio and remove the bad diode.
Put the new diode in, making sure the white band is on the same side as the original diode.
Once again flip the radio over to trace side of the board and solder the new diode in. To do this place the tip on the solder point, making sure to touch both the solder point of the board and the wire from the diode. take the solder and touch it to the solder point, not the soldering iron tip. Once enough solder is on the point you can remove the soldering tip. Don't use too much solder.
Once both points have been re-soldered, solder the speaker wires back to the speaker. Red is positive, it connects to the tab marked by the positive symbol "+". The white wire is negative. It goes to the negative symbol, "-". You can just reheat the tab, and put the end of the wire into the melted solder and remove the solder tip while holding the wire in place until it cools enough harden again.
After the speaker is re-soldered, Put the covers back on. Now be very careful hooking up the radio to power. If you hook it up backwards again it will blow the diode again. Once the power wire is connected, turn on the radio, it should work fine at this point.
Good Luck!
Which wire coming off the
the black wire is ground. It only has a red strip because it was split from the red wire. Red is positive.
I need more transmission range
A lot of people will say that you need to peak and tune the radio to get more range. And it will, but what it really comes down to is your antenna system.
Even with the best peak and tune, if you don't have a good antenna system, it won't do you any good.
You need to make sure the antenna is a good match. If you don't know what that means, then you should refer to your manual on SWR. The antenna has to be tuned so that transmit power does not get reflected back into the radio. If that is happening, all of the RF power is not leaving the antenna, and you are not getting out as good as you can.
Once you have a good antenna system, then you can worry about peak and tuning. But for a peak and tune, I charge.
Key mike no hears me but shows meter
You didn't mention if you hear the other radio. If not, here's a common problem and solution.
That's usually a defective amc stage that produces RX audio and TX modulation. It's an integrated circuit that will require a tech fixing it. You will have a transmitted carrier with no modulation, and no sound in your speaker. However, make sure you have a good mike plugged in first, and substitute a known good mike to verify it's not the mike.
However, if you hear them, and they see your signal, but no talk (modulation), then the problem is usually your mike. Try another one in this case. Thanks, Bill

usually, you connect up the PA,ans switch, it on and talk, it will not go unless selected. use the maual to help.
I connected straight to the battery
You're good. I've always had my 19 Ultra II hooked to the battery, and it works beautifully. This way you'll always have an outstanding power and ground connection.
I can not get out on my cb
turn the mic gain all the way up. Make sure the antenna has been tuned for best SWR.
Take your radio to a CB shop and have them peak and tune it.
