Garmin GPSMAP 168 Sounder GPS Receiver - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

There are a couple of tide software updates available on Garmin.com in the downloads and updates section. You will need to register your product and download. It took me a while fumbling around before I could find the updates. I got some "no updates are" available messages but there are, so keep looking. If you have a newer computer, you will need to purchase a serial to USB converter too. I had the same inaccurate tide message and the updates fixed my GPSmap 168. ps. you will need the unit ID #, and the Garmin instructions are incorrect. Go to menu 2x, Systm, then hit menu again, and pick "software version".

I am sorry to hear regarding the trouble. Unfortunately, it would be tough to find the parts or even a similar used camera. I tried searching down with major vendors as well as ebay and unable to find any used one. I doubt if any local repair shop would have the parts or could arrange it with the distributor. The only possibility would be either using the way it is or buying a new one. The only other alternative i could suggest is to contact the below :-

Usually, the users or owners are up to date wih the devices feature functionalities. Device designers sometimes require time to redesign the modern innovations suitable with comparison to the onces on the market. First. allow sometime for design applications to take place to be made available soon as that is achieved. Second, informing the appropiate designers begins the request for new versions to be redesigned, modeled or innovated. Contact the devices manufactuers to details concerning the brand on the market. Usually, they would make a new game disk or simply invent a newer game altogether as improvement over the old one. Also, provide suggestions on the userability on the one on the market right now. Newer devices for some companies would least take place unless there was a need. For example, let them know of the expectations either to invent a newer device every years since the older onces are simple to over impress after so long.

To fix the problem, the screen back light must be replaced.

Had the same problem. Caused by Low battery. You have to hook it up to the car adapter and let it charge for a few minutes and it will work great.

What you will be doing is actually deleting the current software then installing a fresh application

I just fixed mine with the same problem. You need to plug it into the AC adapter and follow the instrustions on page 73 to restore the unit. Worked fine all day after I did that.

I had the same problem and contacted Garmin. This is being caused by a software issue that started when the government updated the software in their WAAS satellites. The Garmin website will give you instructions on how to correct this but I have listed them below:

Power on unit
Press enter to get past the I Agree screen
Now you should be on the satellite page, press the menu button one time
Highlight WAAS off and press enter
By doing this, the unit should not shut down.

I followed these instructions and my 168 Sounder is working fine.

This may help. Mine has the GPS antenna build into the bracket at the back. I removed the bracket and the unit did not go into the error screen and the sounder worked fine. The GPS would not locate but it has not antenna attached so DOH!! I have orderd a new antenna with the BNC connector and will post if that fixes the problem. At this point I'm guessing its a blow GPS antenna.

I suggest you try resetting the device by following the instructions in the owner's manual. If the issue persists, it may be due to an error in the map database. You can try reinstalling the maps to the memory card after unlocking them for your device. If you are still experiencing issues, please contact Garmin Product Support for further assistance . By 'resetting' you mean it switches off, and because it is connected to power, it boots back up. Do you have a SD Card in it? I had trouble with a Nuvi 1350 with SD Card that had the whole USA Map on it, mine came with the Canada Map only. It would randomly turn off, so I decided to buy a Factory Refurbished Drive 50. I removed the SD Card and Reset the Nuvi and it worked perfectly after that. The Drive 50 was also a bit flaky, and resetting fixed that as well. You can back up your Favourites beforehand.

I recently purchased a Garmin GPSMAP 78s I had a lot of trouble calibrating the compass; I literally tried it hundreds of times without success. I also did a hard reset etc etc. Believe me I definitely tried everything possible but to no avail I did contact Garmin but they didn't have an answer straight away for the problem I have now sorted it as follows: Do each step VERY SLOWLY, MUCH slower than you think you should There are three steps to go through in calibrating the compass 1)Spinning the whole unit around flat 2)Flipping it over longitudinally and then 3) Flipping it over end to end. But remember do each step VERY slowly and go to the next step when prompted by the unit This solved my issue. I can now calibrate my compass 9 out of 10 attempts Hope that helps

To open the MTP settings on your Garmin Nuvi 50LM, you will need to access the device's menu. From the main menu, select the "Settings" option and then select the "System" option. From there, you should be able to access the MTP settings. If you are still unable to access the settings, you may need to contact the manufacturer for assistance.

You will need to go to the Garmin website on your computer or laptop and set up an account. I think the sign up is free. You will then need to connect your Garmin to the computer and update it that way.

Hi Earl, Sometime it could just be of aging. I have a 130, it was having similar problems, until i realized it was the screen not showing, but power on turning on. In your case, I probably probably try a hard factory reset as follows: To perform a master reset:

1. Turn off the device.
2. Press the PAGE, ENTER2, and POWER buttons simultaneously.
3. Release all buttons once the Do you really want to erase all user data? message appears.
4. Select Yes.
