First and foremost shut down the device. Remove the battery if possible for 1 minute. Then restart/power up device. If still no luck or response. Go into the setting and look for the reset to default setting if there is no option for touch screen controls. Best of luck

That is probably caused by the mechanism control not being able to determine which mode the deck is in. A new mode switch may cure it but I won't hold my breath as it probably needs a capacitor kit as well.

Nothing wrong with the Canon, but you cannot expect one piece of equipment to play tapes recorded a dozen years ago on equipment of a different make.

Your best bet will be to find someone to transfer the tapes to DVD for you.

this camcorder is an earlier model thus the zoom control motor could be weak, if so open it and take out the camera section and unscrew the zoom control motor, loosen it, some sort of sticky grease on the worm gear also obstructs, clean it with small brush or cotton bud. then apply a little silicon grease. don't let dust go in.
