Kenwood CT 401 Hi-Fi Stereo Dual Cassette Deck Single Dual Cassette Deck Questions & Answers
Yes, the belts need to be check and idlers or whatever drive mechanism that is used in that system. Dual deck units are among the most unreliable units there are and a reason I tell people for the last 30 years not to buy those things. Almost most of the time they are not worth fixing due to their poor performance at the end. These are facts not just opinion.

Replace capacitor 110 (47uf 25v), it fixed my problem, should cost about 25 cents and take about 1 hour of your time :-)

I would have thought that it should go from the amp to the tuner, then the tape deck and finally the CD deck.
I'm suspecting that your tuner is faulty and thats whats causing the system to shut down

Hello :
If you can hear a free running motor it may a belt has come off or is worn or broken, remove the cover and check the capstan drive belt as this is the main belt the puts the unit in certain modes, the unit sounds to me like it is stuck in a certain mode so the micro is locked up, inspect all belts and make sure none are egg shaped, if you find one that is replace it, you can also purchase some rubber rejuvenator that restores grip to belts and the capstan roller at a local electronics supply store like FRY'S Electronics etc....

Sounds like you have either a speaker wire exposed and/or crossed. Or speakers that are capable of too much wattage/ohms resistance for the receiver to match.

There are sensor leaf switches that may not be contacting properly or the drive belt may be too slack to position meachanism properly. Have it checked by pro/tech

Karla, Equipment and water especially SALT water (AND SALT AIR) don't mix very well. The constant high moisture environment affects all the connections (the wires) the rca connectors (where one thing plugs into another, AND the switches. The wires may LOOK good but the connections may not be. When you say "all seems to be in good condition" tell me specifically how you checked them. Sometimes they LOOK good, but ar not making connection. While your stereo is ON, get in there and wiggle everything and see it the speakers come back on.
My first guess is your amplifier/reciever. Does it have speaker switches? If it does, move them up and down or click them many times to see if you can work the corrosion a little. This may help.
I'll try and help, let me know some of the stuff I've asked fo above.
