Hi Jay, you should clean, with some type of contact cleaner, the volume control, you should disassemble the device, to have better access for cleaning

Usually the ear piece is ok, unless you typically get it caught in something. The main problem is usually found in the opposite end where the wires to the line jack can come looses or the jack is damaged.
