When I look through the view finder--everything is upside down???

Astro telescopes normally do show an inverted image, since for most purposes this does not matter. For terrestrial viewing, such as thru someone's window, you can buy an "erect image" or "correct image" prism which gives an upright image. http://www.optcorp.com/telescope-accessories/optical-tube-accessories/diagonal-prism-eyepiece-holder.html?a_diagonal_design_f=1090 I don't know of such a thing for the finder scope, you would have to buy a new finder. http://www.optcorp.com/celestron-9x50-illum-ra-correct-image-finderscope-93781.html

Focus knob on Celestron NexStar 5 does not appear

Does the focuser move in and out when you turn the knob? If it does then go outside during the day timne and practice focusing on a distant object. Use the eyepiece with the biggest number written on it.

This will give you the lowest magnification-- which is easier to focus.

You must follow the setup procedure exactly for the scope to have accurate gotos.

Get the manual out and read it several times. You can practice inside just to get familiar with how the scope operates.

Why is the cap at the end smaller thna the

Yes, that's the point of it.

Remove the entire (full diameter) cap for stellar and planetary viewing, or just the smaller diameter central cap for viewing the Moon which is far brighter and is too bright without either adding a neutral density filter or by partially masking the optical tube assembly.
