If you bought exactly the same remote, then it should work without doing anything (just make sure it has batteries) if you bought a Universal Remote, you should input the codes for Panasonic first.

You don't specify what you are playing the 'home video' on or how you have made connections between equipment.
There are input terminals under the front, left hand side, flap for recording from external video equipment. There are S-video input and Audio/Video inputs (yellow, white and red). Before selecting record you have to Press (Input Select) to select the input channel for the equipment you have connected.
I hope this may help you achieve what you require.

Over heating while watching a movie

Take the top off the unit and give it a good blasting out with canned or compressed air. Make sure all vent holes are clear and open, and that the unit isn't setting atop a heat source, like a receiver, amp or cable box.

Date shown as 27 March and 'Auto' will not show

I am not sure but I think this model has no DVB-T tuner. Since all analog TV sources are gone, there is no way it can set the current date automatically.
You should turn date to manual and set it properly.

Hope this solves the issue!

MY panasonic DVD Recorder DMR-E55

Hi Annie,
To confirm if the remote was already faulty, you may check it by pointing the infrared emitter to your digital camera or cellphone camera while pressing the button, you will see it flashing in the camera if it is working.
After you confirmed that only some of the buttons was working, the main board processor was already malfunctioning, you may replaced it by ordering online. Click this link.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

The problem is it says

I love these sorts of problems. The typical estimated cost to replace the laser (which may also contain the spindle motor in the same block - as one part) and labour including alignment, firmware, etc. is around $200 - $300 approximately at an authorised Panasonic service centre. You would need to take the unit to a repair centre for a quote on the relevant repairs/parts etc., involved. This way you can make a decision as to whether or not to go further.

However, if the discs you got with the recorder are meant to be recordable, and it can't record them, chances are the laser could just be dirty (factory dust if you bought it new or general dust if you got it secondhand) or it may need refocusing/aligning, or the discs are defective.

These are good units, but keep in mind the DMR-E55 is a 2004 model and does not feature a built in HDD or digital tuner - it is not unfixable though. The other thing you can do which is cheaper, as well as using a DVD lens cleaner disc, is to use a different brand of blank DVD-R/RWs - it might not like the discs you got with it. Have you tried different discs? have you tried to play a shop-bought DVD movie in it? if so, does it read the disc?

Try the lens cleaner disc and different blank DVDs first. If neither fixes the issue, consider the above option - take it to a workshop for analysis/quote.

Panasonic dmr-e55 need code to work with our dish.

We would be happy to help you with that. Here is a list of codes that should address your DISH Network remote to your Panasonic DVD Recorder: 627, 614, 777, 633, 554, and 628.

Press and hold the DVD/VCR button located on the top of the remote until all the mode buttons at the top of the remote light up, then release. Use the number buttons to enter one of the codes for your Panasonic DVD Recorder, then press the pound (#) button. If the code entered is valid for the remote, the mode light flashes three times. To check that the code works try several different functions on the remote to make sure it will properly operate your Panasonic DVD Recorder. Keep in mind that some codes may not be compatible with your equipment. If this is the case, please try the other codes listed for that device until you find one that is compatible with your equipment. We hope this helps and thank you for being a valued DISH Network customer!

Automatically shuts off completely whilst I am

As mentioned in postings elsewhere on this forum, the most likely problem area with this model recorder is the power supply - in particular IC1 (STRG6353 or similar number) this can cause continuous self-check mode, as well as potential shutdown (with or without a disc inserted). As also mentioned in other postings, the easiest way to confirm this is by measuring the 12V rail with an oscilloscope (a volt meter is too slow). If this rail is too low or varies, then IC1 is the prime candidate. It is also a good idea to check all other components in the PSU whether they are directly linked to this IC or not - especially electrolytic capacitors, as well as any leaky diodes and shorted or open circuit resistors, including fusible types.

As with any electrical product, always check the power supply thoroughly and you could always get a second opinion from an authorised service agent (subject to a fee) to see if the IC really is the culprit with your machine. My guess here is this IC has probably experienced a partial failure internally. In spite of being a 2004 model, it is not unfixable. Thanks for asking FixYa first! I hope this helps somewhat.

Can not play dvd keeps self-checking what do i do

Sounds very much like a power supply issue. If the machine stays in self-check mode or shuts down without allowing a single disc to load and record/play, then you can suspect IC1 in the PSU (STRG6353 or similar). The easiest way to confirm this is by measuring the closest voltage rail (around 12V) to this device with a oscilloscope (a digital voltmeter is too slow). If it is too low or varies, then IC1 is the prime candidate. Check other components in the PSU as well, just to be sure there are no leaky components which may cause further trouble later on.

You can also update the firmware for this model, unless it has already been done.
