normal if it is the outside surface that is warm as that is the condenser exchanging the heat through a panel the compressor will run for a period until the heat inside the compartment is brought down Experience has proved that to get any fridge /freezer to work well , place a bowel of water in first as that gives a heat source to cool down and it will do so more quickly that just an empty volume

Hello John; My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician. There is nothing I enjoyed more than getting a service call on a refrigerator freezer. There are so few parts and the parts are easy to access. Other than a premature compressor failure, you could have gone into a site such as this, explained the problem, and have someone such as I walk you through it.

The compressor has a start device that could be the problem. If you remove it it should not rattle if it does it is very likely the problem. If it doesn't rattle then it could be your compressor. Check the start device first. it is located directly on the side of the compressor. and is easy to remove and install anoter.

you do not leave them alone they may have refrigerant flowing through them. look in your owners manual/instructions for more info.

Also an refrigeration appliance technician would know the wiring by heart and take 20 minutes maximum to work it out.

Question edited to add maker! All questions need 'make model (what it is) as first three words. That is an overheating fault. Replace the fluff with no fluff. Make sure the condenser coils are free of dust and there is good airflow Or It is low on refrigerant gas and you need a service tech.. ..
