wow..that's most definitely a video drive error.
1. Check to see your settings are good still. It's not out of the realm of possibility that something glitched in the settings.
2. Missing information is a video drive issue, period. I'd suggest that you have a video board that's truly unhappy. Is this still under warranty?
Hope so, since these service calls can run some serious dough.

I have Fix dozen of this set, and in all cases when they smoke and spark you have a bad Y sustain Board. This board is Normally not sold separate, but as part of the Panel. This would deem the set too expensive for repair. Part Number 9-885-048-48

Just check - easiest with another tv if you have one that the signal source you are using is not the cause of the dimming. Also check that the voltage supply to the set is at the correct level - unlikely but a slightly lower voltage on the power circuit could dim your picture.
The phosphor in a plasmascreen is generally a thin coating inside each of the tiny glass pockets which contain the plasma gas mixture (each of which becomes a pixel when activated).
Unless you could open up each one of the pixel pockets and recoat the inside (not recommended) the answer to your question is no.
Since the picture is made with phosphor, engineers can accurately predict the geometric decline of the phosphor?s potential brightness. Note that while the brightness declines slowly, the phosphors never actually burn out.
Also, note how the rate slows over time.
The rate of decline points to a specification called ?Life to Half Brightness? or LTHB. The half life ranges from about 10,000 to 60,000 hours, depending on model, it is about the same as you?d expect in a high-quality, properly calibrated TV or studio monitor.(see attached graph).
Here is the link to the user manual for your set if you need it;
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=PFM42B1
Check page 97 of the pdf (page 45(GB) of the manual) - it explains the self diagnosis feature. Sorry I couldn't find the details of the resulting flashing light's meaning online - you need to contact sony with the results to find out for sure if your screen is the problem.
Hope this helps - sorry if bad news :)

To find the code for your Sony TV using the Newstar NTR B28Z remote, you can try these general steps:
Turn on your Sony TV.
Press and hold the "TV" button on your Newstar remote until it blinks twice.
Enter the code for Sony TVs. Some common Sony TV codes are: 0000, 0011, 0080, 0111, 1234. If none of these work, you can proceed to the next step.
Press the "Power" button on the Newstar remote. If the TV turns off, the code is correct. If not, try a different code.
Once you've found the correct code, press the "TV" button again to lock it in.
If none of the provided codes work, you might need to consult the manual of your Newstar remote or contact their customer support for assistance.
