Try cable connection, the X-Box will run better on online games anyway with cable connection. WEP mode was obsolete years ago and represents a real security hazard. Changing the router for a router with AES2 will enhance your security. Cable will make security better too.

HOW DO I ESTABLISH SECURITY FOR AN EXISTING WIFI?

Well, all of the routersseem sto work failry much the same, and certainly the function is the same...just how you interface is different. Below, I am providing a list of the things that I prefer to change.
The key with routers is they are meant to be adjusted by Geeks, ONE main detail is you have to save before you leave a page, or your changes are discarded, without notification that you would expect.

SAVE every change and you should be okay.

So, go to the website for your router maker, and get the manual. Typically, you connect to the router and put in the address bar a direct address like 192.168.1.1. or very similar.

Then you can change what you need to or better yet, comb through and set as suggested below:

Wireless Router

It is usually easiest to run the install wizard, but be sure to be ready to set the items listed below.

Things to set:

Note: Routers are intended to be set by geeks. You have to SAVE EVERY page, or the changes will be lost. A geek knows this (apparently). The router gives no protest...just dumps your changes.

1. Login password (RECORD THIS!!). Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is not the security issue.

2. Set a recognizable system ID.

3. Invoke wireless security of at least WEP.

a. Assign your own access code, 10 digit home or cell #. Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is not the security issue.

4. Check that your router is set to broadcast its' presence.

I lost the passwork for my Toshiba router Model

You can reset the factory defaults, then login using the original username and password.

To reset the Wireless Routing Center to factory defaults, insert a straightened paper clip into the Load Default hole on the back of the router to press the button. Keep pressing and turn the Wireless Routing Center off and on. Wait for at least five seconds before you release the button. Then wait for the Wireless Routing Center to finish booting.

By default, the user name is admin and the password is password.

Please rate my solutions! =)

With an Ethernet cable, connect the "wired" port on your desktop/laptop to one of the "wired" ports on the router.

Access the router's built-in web-server, and "reset" the router to "factory-settings".

Then, run the "Wired Networking Setup Wizard".
Then, run the "Wireless Networking Setup Wizard",
to configure your wireless network, for up to 250 wireless devices (iPod Touch, laptops, et cetera).

How to hook to the wireless network

I am not familiar with your particular make and model. Normally, you can configure such a router with no password. Many people will say you need a password for security and I will not disagree. However, I think a password is at your option. If there is a password on your device now and you forgot it, I'd try :"Admin". You may wish to check the documentation that came with your device or check with the manufacturer.

Let me know if this works for you.

MTU settings

So your first problem is to learn how to login to your router. Please see your documentation. You can usually find the documentation for any router/homegateway at the vendors website.

If you still can't logon you may have to do a "hard reset" of the router/gateway to force it back to the default logon/password.

Now having solved that you need to understand that the largest MTU setting that you can use to increase your internet performance must be equal to or smaller than the smallest MTU setting between you and your internet target. If you make the MTU larger than that it will slow down your connection because it will now have to use 2 frames transmit and recieve what it used to only use one for.

While there are tools that can help you with that, the simplest solution is to find out what your ISP says the MTU should be.
