Words and many images have shadows, or ghost-like

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

So my boys were watching cartoons on our Sony

1) unplug and leave for 24 hrs to try a reset to factory default.
otherwise.......

Self repair on these sets is not a matter of board swapping like a PC!

Those that have attempted repair have come undone as the problems domino from the attempt. When a board is changed ( Power to Sustain brds) the unit needs to be totally retuned. This involves generating a hatch pattern to correctly align the convergence guns to the power board for which there are corresponding components.

The cost of repair shoulod be about $300, but many who DIY end up spending 2-3 tmes that amount to avoid paying a professional to come in and fix it. There is also a proble with moving 61" TV's as they tend to buckle if not moved and transported as per the manual. Chassis warp as a resulyt and it is a disaster to try and get it all back in shape.

Take the plunge if it is so loved.. get a pro to fix it and save on frustration, dissapointment and more money than its worth being ploughed into it.

Thanks for using FIXYA

Left half of picture has a green ghost like shade

The sounds like the light engine is bad. Sony is notorious for blobs because of the three LCD chip inside consisting of a red, green, and blue chip. The light from the lamp is reflected and then combined back together to form a brilliant picture. Unfortunately one of the chips is bad, or has melted due to extreme heat from the lamps. This can cause the color blobs on the screen. A lot of people experience blue or green blobs in the center or on the sides of their sets.

The green is not lining up it is not focusing

Your covergence circuit has failed. You'll most likely need to have the STK amplifier ICs replaced, as well as the supply fuses. You may also need to replace any resistors that have been burned.
Good luck.

I need the outer screen

Solution 1
You can call a local television repair and they can order it for you

Solution 2
Check eBay for very reasonable prices. The only worrisome part about this is shipping. Insure your product. The screens are easily breakable.

Solution 3
Call or email the manufacturer and get a part number and price. Keep the part number to search online if they are too expensive.

Sony kp-61s70

I used to work at an arcade and we constantly had the problem of hues on the screen, there is a product you can buy that will fix this problem, though I'm not sure how much it costs since we just had one at the arcade. It is a magnatized wand that you plug in to a power source and wave around in front of the screen for a few moments. It did the job everytime.

Popping sound from TV

Most likly it is one of the crt connections to the Hi voltage block that is causeing this problem or the crt it self is archuing , or the Hi voltage transformer, or the Hi volyagre distribution block is going bad. your going to have to observe ther problem happen or know what to look for when troubleshooting this set. I would recomend that you do not attempt to troubleshoot this set as it is a high voltage problem and theres enough Hi voltage inside this puppy to make a grown man cry or kill him!

I need the code from my Sony RM Y180 television remote to operate my Sony CD/DVD PLAYER DVP-NS57P please?

Question edited for clarity. This is unlikely to work, although I do see the remote has a VCR/DVD Source button. https://www.amazon.ca/Players-Kv-20Fv300-Kv-27Fa310-Kv-32Fs320-Kv-29Fs120/dp/B0874DLQMP And Sony says it is not programable DVP-NS57P The model is not programmable. https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/remote-control-programming/models/dvp-ns57p https://www.google.com/search?q=sony+dvd+remote+codes You can buy a Copycat remote for the DVD Player if yours is lost. https://www.google.com/search?q=DVP-NS57P+replacement+remote ..
