ok, if you go to a unused video input you see faint or distinct curved faint blue lines in the back ground?

I know what you can try to resolve this issue.

Confirm model number and that you see it at the dark screen etc.

Green Tube maybe trying to short out or you can try adjusting screen drive to the Green Tube by turning control down a notch, Sony had a bad run on these with alot of Bad Tubes.

If the flash focus isn't doing anything you have bad convergence IC chips. This is a common problem with rear projection sets. The chips wear out from heat. You need new ones and they need to be replaced in pairs. The parts are not very expensive, the last set I did cost $38 for the pair on a Sony KP-57WS510. The repair requires some very tedious desoldering and soldering in the new ICs. If you have some experience with electronics and soldering it is not very hard. A shop will charge $300 and up for this repair. If you would like more details on this post a comment back here.

If you are connected to a HD cable or satellite box, the aspect ratio is set by that box. If it is set for 1080i 16:9 wide screen mode then your TV is locked at that ratio. This is good considering you have a Hi-Scan 1080i television in the Sony KP57HW40. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks...

The issue on these TV's is the CRT's are failing. This was a very common problem with these series of Sony projection TV's. The original CRT's are no longer available but there are suitable replacement CRT's, but they then all HAVE to be replaced at the same time. The part numbers are as follows for the new CRT's. Please take a few moments to rate my answer. Thanks...

BLUE CRT A-1502-022-A
GREEN CRT A-1502-025-A
RED CRT A-1502-021-A

Remove unshielded speakers or other metallic objects near the TV. It can cause picture distortion.
  1. Tune the TV to channel or cable program.
  2. Run the TV for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Press FLASH FOCUS on the front panel of the TV.
  4. A cross pattern appears and FLASH FOCUS begins to
work. The adjustment is completed when the cross pattern becomes white and you are returned to the program you were watching.
You cannot perform any other functions until FLASH FOCUS has
completed its cycle. If you perform any other operation while FLASH FOCUS is in progress, FLASH FOCUS operation is canceled.

Try adjusting the convergence. If it won't move see below- (or hitting Magic Focus for some Hitachi’s)

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

For some reason deflection has stopped before the protection circuits turned off beam current and two or more picture tubes (CRTs) have serious phosphor burns. Some times its a power surge somtimes its a broke part inside the tv . Once it happens those tubes are junk (Unless they don't really bother you and you can live with it.). Usual repair cost is about 750.00 To get CRTs replaced. If they get replaced make sure the rtoot of the problem is found first.I'd reccomend paying about a 75.00 sevice call fee to have a servicer take a look at it and confirm this and give you an estimate..Second Possibility is If your lucky he'll find it's just a dead bug on the mirror and he can just clean it. And I hope thats all it is .

On this model KP-57HW40, if the screen is blue with or without some slight curved trace lines---either you have a bad BLUE picture tube or maybe an adjustment that can restore the set to normal operation.

A lot of these sets had bad picture tubes----if a bad tube they are not available--only way to get one is remove the bad one in the set and have it rebuilt--very expensive and usually not worth the costs.

Let me know---if you go to a unused video input--is the screen Blue with or without faint curved lines?

If it is I can give you fairly easy instructions on how to try to adjust for this-----Understand: if the adjustment corrects the problem you may only be buying some time with this set---if the problem was caused by a bad tube---sooner or later it may come back...

Let me know if you want the instructions and I will post them here for you.

To correctly repair your tv all three CRT's (picture tubes) would need to be replaced as instructed by SONY service bulletins. Many years ago SONY wanted a better brighter picture and began making some CRT's differently and "better" . But they sadley did not do enough testing . After a few years they realised the mistake and they paid dearly for it. Unfortunatly enough time has passed that the $750.00 or more cost or repair can only come of the consumers pocket . They are good solid tv's when the CRT's get replaced with Panasonic picture tubes.
Sometimes screen control adjustments can done to make the TV work for now but usually a flicker in color remains and it most likely will get bad again .
Hope this explains it for you.
