Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Convergence problem, how to fix with my remote?

There is a secret service menu to converge the Sony KP53HS30.

Caution: Be careful, there are many settings that can be tampered with. Some may be hard to undo.

Procedure: (use the remote control for these steps unless noted)

1. Turn TV off with System Off (under flap on remote)

2. Press: Display, 5, Volume +, then Power. If successful, service text will appear on the screen.

3. Use 2 & 5 to select the PJE Category.

4. Press 9 to get to fine convergence adjusting.

5. Press 6 several times to get the convergence screen of choice. I like the grid.

6. Use the remote's arrow keys (joystick), move the brackets around until you have found the area to adjust. Press the center of the joystick to change the bracket from white to a color. Use the joystick to adjust the color. Press 3 to change color to adjust. When done, press center of joystick again.

Note: Try to keep the grid even and squared up.

7. Repeat steps 5 and/or 6 for all parts of the screen that need it.

8. Once done, you need to save your settings. Press: Mute, Enter. Then on the TV, press "Flash Focus"

9. Turn off power.

TV is ready to use.

Connecting the laptop VGA output to my Sony-KP-53HS30

There are products such as VideoSecu PC to TV Presentation Converter. I haven't used them. I'm not sure you are going to get the resolution that you want. A DLP projector does a pretty good job. I know that is not what you are looking for.

Type "PC to TV Converter" in Google. They are about $40 to $60 bucks. Before you buy one, read the reviews.

Rear Projection TV Sony KPFS 53 M31 :Red screen, 6 times blinking

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

For any TV model with a CRT or 3 tubes and your description of "red is getting too bright" indicates that the controller transistor or power pack IC for that gun/CRT/tube has shorted. Another possible indicator would be fine diagonal white lines and an overly high contrast.

Often this controller transistor or power pack IC would be heatsinked and located at a squarish PCB (printed circuit board) right at the very small end of the CRT/tube. Corrective action would require replacement.

If the "plastic box with 6 poties" you described would look like the image below, then that would be the Focus/Screen Adjustment for the three tubes.

Unfortunately I do not have a schematic or a service manual hence I could not be more specific. Should you be interested, a service manual is available here.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Viewing HDTV on a Sony 53" KP-53HS30

This TV is a projector - not a plasma. I can't see how you would get "burn in" on this set. It should handle an HD picture fine.

Snoy kp-53hs 30 projection tv

I have a Philips Rear Projected TV and the time mine did something similar it ended up costing me $400 NZD to get the main board replaced. Sorry samsunwest, you may have to call in a service agent to take a look. It would be worth your while checking out the warranty for your Sony before you call though as it could possibly be under warranty.
