Your TV most likely a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

The standby/timer is flashing 6 times on my Sony KP-53HS30 TV

Hello,

6 blinks, then a pause, and then 6 blinks again would mean Low B OCP/OVP (Overcurrent/Overvoltage)". This could mean that either the +5 line is overloaded (A, B boards), or that the +5 line is shorted (A, B boards).

Commonly, this is fixed by replacing the thermal fuse. You will need to remove the lamp, and then remove the fuse (it may be behind the lamp), and get it replaced. This in most cases will fix the problem with the 6 blinks.

It may be safer to allow a qualified TV service person to do this however just in case there are dangerous voltages.

Hope this is of some help and that you get your TV working again soon!

Best of luck,

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

Standby indicator light on TV flashes - Sony TV

Even Sony is having some reliability problems with their video and tv products.

The continuous blink indication, as the link you pointed out indicates, is an IC problem. Probably the IC that contains the diagnostic routine in it; although I don't know that for sure.

The IC 301 mentioned in the link is what we call the Jungle chip; it is the main processing agency for the video, particularly the Y/C processing. It is a big, very complicated IC with over 50 pins. It could be the IC or something totally unrelated that the IC is merely monitoring. There are a host of functions manageed by the Jungle IC among which are automatic switching, buffering of video, S-video driver the R, G and B outputs - and one or more signals to the protection circuit....... if all that means anything to you.

So, what is the problem? It will require a deeper diagnostic investigation; preferrably by someone who can put hands on the set and do some testing and evalutating.

As a general rule, any time the blinking of the standby light occurs it is determined to be a major matter. Unless a simple hard reset cures it you can plan on it being a moderate to expensive repair.

The audible click is the relay switching power ON/OFF. The protection circuit is the controlling factor which tells the relay to turn the set off. It may be coming from the Jungle IC or somewhere else.

But the real question is whether to fix or replace. The set is getting along in years. As a rule of thumb, any set with a serious problem and is more than 3 or 4 years old is NOT a candidate for repair (unless it is known to be a trivial repair like a bad speaker or such).

Another rule that is used is this: If the repair cost is over 1/2 of the replacement cost for a similar set, then replace it.

Hope this is some help. Sorry I can't give you a precise prognostication. If IC 301 was known to be the culprit - and we don't know that for sure - then you would be into a major repair getting that ic out and doing the diagnostic routines after its replacement. I think the replacement of that IC will normally run around $150; probably $75 for the part alone.

Let me know if I can help further.
