My Sony WEGA rear projection TV (KP-FW46) is

Hi,

Hi,

This is a convergence issue. By making adjustments in settings, this would not solve the issue. You need to change the Convergence IC.If you want to repair it, revert and i would be glad to guide you.You need to have electronics experience, should know to read schematics ( if required ), could use multimeter and soldering iron.

**Please understand that by opening a TV you are exposing yourself to many dangers, including electrocution. Be sure that the set is un-plugged and keep one hand behind your back whenever possible to avoid a shock through the heart as this CAN KILL YOU. If you have zero electronic experience I would not attempt this repair.**
OK, public service announcement over.

The components that do that job are called "convergence" circuitry. The usual components to fail are the "Convergence Amplifiers" which are usually a pair of Integrated Circuits mounted to a large heat sink. (STK-392 or STK-394) may be printed on the IC along with some number such as 110, 160, 120.

Below is s a walk through on a Mitsubishi, this applies to Sony as well, they all use the same chips and circuits, you will at least be able to see what is involved in the repair.

http://www.techlore.com/article/22530/DIY-Repair-Replacing-Convergence-IC-s-on-a-Mitsubshi-TV-Set/

Also look for burnt resistors around these components, as it is common. If the problem is isolated to only one color the replacing those STK amps and any burnt resistors will fix it. If all the colors are out of whack (Red, green, and blue, like a 3d effect all over) then you are likely looking at a fuse gone bad in the voltage supply to those amplifiers. Usually Sony or Mitsubishi have these fuses. The fuses (called "pico-fuses") are generally orange, or green, with no color stripes like resistors have.

You can look up these parts online easily with the exception of the burnt resistors and fuses which you usually need a manual(which you can also purchase online). The STK's price will vary from $15-$90 depending on which one, and the resistors have to be of the metal oxide type so as not to change value with heat.

One place to get parts is www.partstore.com

You could also get the IC's from even radioshack or Fry's.

If you want a professional to repair it, be prepared to part with around $300-$400.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Timer/stand by light in the front panel is

dodgebrat250,

By blinking 5 times I will assume that you mean the standby light blinks 5 times approximately 1 second apart, then pauses for 3 seconds and repeats. If this is true then you have a fairly complicated problem which could be anyone of three different areas. If you are not trained in electronics you will probably need a technician to solve the problem.

The problem is on the A or C board or it may need the screen drive turned up. One the C board check Q705, 732, 761 and all associated components. Look for bulging capacitors and replace as necessary. On the A board check Q218, 219, 220 and any associated components. Also look for bad electrolytic capacitors as above.

This is only a small part of what the problem could be and without actually looking at the set and doing testing it is difficult to recommend any further action.

I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4425498-basic_standard_tv_troubleshooting which might help track the problem down.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the generous rating.

Yes there is, you can first go into the customer menu and select convergence--see if it will or will not adjust in that area. If you are willing I will tell you how to get into the tech menu to do the same thing; understand if some part of the screen will not adjust in customer menu--a bad convergence IC.

This model should use two of the STK-392-560 CHIPS FOR THIS--about 14 dollars on Ebay for a pair.

If this is the case I can tell you how to do the repair--total parts cost should be under 25 dollars.

Try adjusting with the Sony remote in the customer menu first.

I have fixed hundreds of sets with this problem--many were Sony.

See attached photo of typical convergence problem and photo of typical convergence chip.

If this told you something you did not know rate this solution as very helpful.

Your TV has a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

3-d pic and colors dont line up?

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix
