Sony Hi8 Cleaning Cassette / Head Cleaner Hi-8 Tape Questions & Answers
Hi,
I have some Sony Hi8
I would not recomend playing the tapes. If that fungus scratches the head you could be in for a massive repair bill. The best you can do is try to wipe it off with cotton buds. I just hope it's not widespread or you could have lost them for good. Only a specialist lab (film restorer) could rescue them then.

While playing an 8mm tape
sounds like the record head(s) may be very dirty, check them, they should clean and shiny if dulled an brown with tape residue, you can clean them with a lint free cloth and head cleaner. tape based cleaners cassette may not be good enough if the heads are very dirty. ensure you give the heads enough time to dry after cleaning 2 mins should be good then run a test record to check them.
hope this helps
thanks for using FixYa

My sony hi8 Handycam TRV 138 gives me a message
The cassette is not being detected when the tray is landing. If the head is not spinning but you are getting the cassette ejected then it is a malfunction of the loading mechanism. Even if the tape end detection optocouplers are defective the fault could be so.If you can check this out then try and test the voltage before and after the cassette loads. there should be a change if not replace. check on the loading mechanism too. Hope this helps. Good day

Tapes no longer reading after head cleaner tape used
Sounds like your cleaning tape deposited too much cleaning solution on the tape head. I would purchase another tape cleaner and run it though the machine WITHOUT any liquid cleaner on it.
Try your tape then.
If you still can't get it work, then your cleaner prob damaged the head. You will need to send it in for service.
