Try 1st: You can take a q-tip dipped in alcohol (not dripping), rub the lens and gently blow it off with canned air. This will remove dust from under the lens as well. I don't recommend "lens cleaner CD's" that you can purchase as they sometimes rip of the lens. Try 2nd: If the CD does not spin up to the proper speed, it is the motor that spins the disk. This can be temporarily fixed by disconnecting the motor wires and using a 9 volt battery to spin the motor in each direction. The trick is to reverse the direction while it is still turning in the opposite direction. This will hopefully burn off the carbon and debris in the motor contacts.

Seems like the Timingfor the Tray Open / close has got disturebed. Could be a bad drive gear, or as simple as a loose Drive belt. Get it checked by a professional.

I also have exactly the same problem with the volume control. I was hoping to resolve the problem by doing some internal cleaning but seems like johanknopper tried it before.

I was thinking of buying a remote control separately as I lost mine in relocations. Found a second hand on-line but I am not sure if they all have the same frequency and if it works with mine.

Any Ideas?

Either the display, the traces (usually ribbon connectors), the power to the board/display, or the support chip could be bad. I would call Sony support (parts) and tell them you need a new display, and see what they can do. You would pretty much need a schematic to troubleshoot this problem for sure, but sometimes you can reseat a ribbon connector or resolder some cracked traces if you tear into the unit and inspect it carefully.
Sometimes the price of parts/boards deters people from fixing the unit, and just living with it.
Perhaps Sony will be an option, give it a try. Here's their contact site for parts:

The speaker outlet connectors are very close to each other - if there is a short circuit between L & R channel terminals his will cause exactly the symptoms you describe when volume is increased
