Sony STR-DE685 problems

I had the same problem, but it is not the tuner module! An exchange of capacitor C899(100μF/35V) on the standby board has resolved the problem. Under a dollar from an electrical store and you are all sorted. 10 minute fix for those with a soldering iron. The issue is if this capacitor gets cooked or over-voltaged, then i no longer supplies the power supply / standby board cannot supply sufficient power to the rest of the unit. Replace this capacitor, and you will have fixed all your problems at once.

How do I connect my turntable? I have tried using the slots for auxiliary, with an Onkyo turntable with standard plugs. Do I need a special adaptor?

Auxiliary will work but its not intended for phono ( record player ). The turn table doesn't have a amp so the sound will be lower. Where as auxiliary is designed for digital connection ( mp3 Laptops etc ) that have they own pre amp. all the turn tables I have use need to be Earthed to the amp via a earthing tag or you will get a bad sound. Hope this helps.

Str-685 has poor fm reception. have tried 3 different antennas.

If you are sure with the antennae then the fault is with the RF section within, It can be related to a faulty RF section, tuner or IF. You need to take a signal test to confirm.

My Sony STR-DE685 Receiver out of the blue now has

In receivers, there are different power supplies or power supply outputs for the receiver and amplifier sections so you can have separate failures with one area not affecting the other. From your description, I think the (probably lower voltage) section for the receiver has either lost a cheap filter capacitor or a regulator IC. Neither of these are expensive parts but I can't know what labor costs in your area might be. An honest tech shouldn't ask more than ~$100 US for that kind of repair.

When I push ON button

It could be a short in your speaker wire or the crossover in your speakers.

1) Turn off your unit and disconnect your speaker wires at the amp, if the protect is no longer displayed when the unit is turned back on, check the connections on the speakers. If you do not visually see a short on the speaker wire connection, turn off the unit and disconnect the wires at the speaker and isolate them so they do not touch then connect the speaker wires at the amp. Turn on the amp and see if the protect is on. If it is on, the wire has a short somewhere in the line. If the protect is off then suspect the speaker has a short in the voice coil or crossover.

2) If the protect is still on after you disconnect the speaker wires at the amp, it could be the power IC in the amp is shorted and needs to be replaced.

Protection circuit Just come on after a while

Make sure the speaker wires are not shorting. Turn the unit off then disconnect one speaker, make sure the wires don't touch before you turn it back on. Play for a long as it usually takes for the protect light to come on. If the protect light does not come on it's a good indication that the cable or speaker is bad. Turn the unit off connect the speaker back and preform the same test on the other side.

The receiver works ok until the vol is reduced and

Make sure the audio level on the left and right channels are balanced. Check the menu for audio levels to adjust and make sure they are not maladjusted. If all levels are adjusted properly then the volume control or volume control circuity may be at fault.
