Marko,

I own the same unit (since 2001) & have had no problems. I would get it looked at & see what the issue is & what it would cost to fix. Would it be worthwhile? Well you'd have to ask yourself how much $$ you'd be willing to spend on a replacement vs repairing this unit & based on how much you'd be willing to spend, would the specs on a replacement unit measure up. You'd have to ignore things like HDMI inputs to keep it apples to apples.

I've owned various Sony components for a long time. I only had to get one unit fixed one time (a CD player that my one year old decided to do a chin-up on :( ). The unit was 7 years old at the time and my son is now 12!!. the unit still functions flawlessly since being repaired. Sony builds their stuff to last, even after beiung abused.

Find out why your Sony is in protect mode and repair it to restore normal operation. This is a common problem with Sony equipment and often is traceable to cold or poorly soldered connections.

Probably the changer mechanism has failed. You will have to disassemble your Sony unit to salvage the discs. As a test, try playing a single disc. You may be able to use your Sony in a limited way.

Take it apart an on the rear of the display you will see capacitors. You will probably see an end cap that is domed. Just replace them all.

Try this and let me know. First unplug the unit. Plug it back in. When you first push the power button, you should hear 1 click followed by another withing 5-20 seconds. My guess is that you don't hear the second click. Am I right?

You have this backwards. Applicable code(s) will be found in the remote control, if it is compatible.
