How can i get the dts sound field to work.

If you are playing media that has both dolby digital audio and dts audio, your player and your receiver will decode the first audio codec listed first by default unless you select it otherwise yourself. If your remote or receiver has an A.F.D. (auto format decode) button, press it until your display shows that the sound source is dolby digital or DTS, whichever sound mode it was you wanted when you started your DVD.

How to turn off 'Protect"?

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=STRDE597&LOC=3
However, If you still have the problem, there is likely damage in the receiver that needs to be corrected. I have a few other posts on this for this receiver. Make sure you don't have shorted speakers connected. One at a time, disconnect your speakers and check them with an ohm meter. If they read 8 ohms, they are electrically ok. Reconnect them to the receiver. If the read 4 or less, they are either of the wrong type or are partially or fully shorted and should be replaced with known good 8 ohm rated speakers with 100 watt program ratings.
Also, you can try using the reset to see if this provides relief. Using the front panel controls, power off. The holding down the 2 channel button, power on. You'll see a reset message on the display. If after this procedure it goes right back into protect mode, the receiver needs professional attention. Best guess is shorted outputs or other damaged components in the power amp section due to wrong type speakers connected or extended high heat operation.

My receiver changes to "protect" then clicks off

Since you had to change the fuse to get it to power on, chances are you have a damaged receiver. You can try resetting the system (instructions below) but I doubt this will provide relief. When a system is doing what yours is, it is more often than not a sign of a short in the system causing excessive power consumption. Many times such problems in the final amplifier section, in the form of shorted output transistors. This most often happens from running with the wrong impedance load, shorted speakers connected, loud volume with inadequate ventilation (high heat conditions) or running the receiver without speakers connected.
Try resetting using the front panel controls. Power off. Then holding the 2 channel button down, power on. You see an abrv reset message. If after doing this you still have the same issue, it's time to investigate repair facilities or due to possibly high cost of repairs simply retire the unit and get another.

Looking for a diagram on how to hook up my dish

There is a wiring diagram PDF posted on Sony's support site. However it lacks a configuration for a satellite receiver. Without knowing your particular Dish setup, I'd say use the Component video cables and a fiber optic for the audio if you can. Otherwise, the component video and coaxial cables are your next best choice to get decent video and surround capability.
In both cases, you need 2 sets of video cables One for the in and another for the out. You only need 1 fiber optic or coaxial for audio if you do not plan on running the TV speaker system. Use the video 2 inputs for either video type.

Can't change FM input mode! Stuck at analog...

Tuner is only analog. As for the Video 1 input you need to go into the menu and change it to the digital port you want to use (optical, coaxial or HDMI) you can set only one input to each digital input port.

How to bypass protection mode on my sony receiver

The protection mode is there for a reason...the main one being to protect your speakers in the event that there is an issue with the amplifier. Bypassing the protection can easily result in the destruction of your speakers and the unit itself. Your receiver needs to be examined by a real live technician.

tip

Display says Protect , and the unit does not start.

Protet mode is a special diagnostic mode that starts when a fault is detected.

When in protection mode the unit is prevented from starting by protection circuit, so to prevent further damage.

Check the speakers and speakers wiring, a contact in speaker wires, or faulty speakers can send the unit in protection.

Try unplugging power cable for one hour or so. then connect cable back and see if you get rid of protect state. Sometimes accumulation of electrostatic charges inside circuit capacitors can kick in protect mode. In that case unplugging the unit from main for some times can get rid of electrostatic charges, and reset circuits by draining power completely.
If that was the problem, you will not get Protect when plugging back power cable.

If you do all the above and still get Protect, then there is a real fault.

In that case the unit may be disassembled and tested to find the fault.

If that is the case I suggest contacting the manufacturer at the number listed on the owners manual, or asking a quote on repair to a local technician.

How do i fix tis problem

First, disconnect all your speakers from the back of the unit. Then turn it back on, if it does not go into protection, turn it off and examine your speaker wires, look for frays that could touch the other binding post (most common problem). Then re connect speakers one by one; testing after each connection. If you get them all re connected and it still plays, you've solved the problem. If you get to a particular speaker and it cuts off, check the wire, then check the speaker. If theres nothing plainly visible, swap the speaker for one that is working and try again. If it still shorts, try a new wire. Beyond that, if it's still shorting, theres a problem internally with the receiver and it need to go to service. If you have all speakers disconnected and it still goes into protection, there is nothing you can do but get it serviced. There are no internal protection "fuses" Hope this helps

The sound on the 2 front speakers and the sub

First, you can find your manual here:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=STRDE597

You may have accidentally pressed the speaker select button and disabled speaker A (main) and enabled Speaker B or disabled both A and B. Start with page 40 in the manual to select Speaker A.

On the remote, press the "Speakers" button (Off/A/B/A+B) repeatedly until you hear some noise.

Try connecting one speaker at a time. The "protect" indicates a short or improper impedence (ohms) in one of the speaker lines. it may not be directly shorted, but I'll need to know what you have hooked up for speakers. Also, do you have any electronic meters?
