MOST, but not all Unidens will reset if you hold down the #2 and #9 button and turn the radio one while holding down those two buttons.

att is attenuator. It reduces the strength on incoming signals. It is meant to mainly reduce the signals of STRONG LOCAL stations that are blocking your reception of other stations adjacent channels. Or, if your are listening to the STRONG LOCAL staton but they sound distorted or muffles, turning on the attenuator (att) might clear up the sound of their transmission. It is alos used to just reduce the sensitivity of your scanner so that you will only hear local calls, like a local/distant switch would do.

provided you turned the squelch know and it didnt help, i would trace back from the squelch control to the first and second transistor you come to and that should be the squelch circuit. if you know how to check them with an ohm meter you can find out which one it is, if not you can just replace them both for under 5 bucks.

are you using an indoor telescopic whip antenna? those only work for close stations, you might need an outdoor antenna,as high as possible to increase the range, or at least as high as the nearby obstructions.

It all depends on the location. Being VHF and not using a repeater or external antenna, the range is likely less than 10 miles. Using a repeater you might get 50 miles or more. If you are thinking long range communications, you really need an HF transceiver. VHF is essentially for local communications.
