My S3 Pro will not

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a couple of ideas to explore/try:
  • format the existing memory (card);
  • replace with another;
  • format/check/ready the memory card using a Card Reader attached to a PC;
  • clean the contacts of the camera's memory slot.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Successfully installing Hyper-Utility2 on my Mac

Hi Paula,

Something that happens with Macs is the file permissions get messed up from installer programs. This problem usually can be corrected by running the disk tools program. It is usually located in your Applications folder in the Utilities sub folder.

You did not specify with version of OSX your Powerbook Pro is running. Make sure you have all the updates from Apple for your OS. You might also need to get an update from Fuji for the Hyper-Utility2 software. That can be found here: Fuji

Lastly, iPhoto is compatible for quick downloads from your camera

What is the write speed for the FinePix S3 Pro?

The write speed when shooting a Raw file in the wide mode is 8 seconds using an xD-Picture card. When the same data is written to a Microdrive or CompactFlash card, the write speed will be 13 seconds. Write acceleration technology is not supported to allow compatibility with most brand name CompactFlash cards. Customers that need faster write speeds should rely on xD-Picture cards.

What is the difference between “Auto” and “TTL” in the flash setting?

Standard TTL can be used with any type of Nikkor lens. In standard D-TTL flash, automatic flash output level compensation is not available. This means that even though the main subject is correctly exposed, the background may not be. Standard D-TTL flash is useful when you want to highlight the main subject or perform flash exposure compensation. D-3D Multi sensor balanced fill-flash together with D-multi sensor balanced fill flash is called Automatic Balanced Fill flash with TTL multi sensor. What this does is it performs a balanced metering that uses multi pattern photometering information to provide a balance between the main subject and the background light. The difference between the D-3D multi sensor and the D-multi sensor is that one is used with D or G type lenses (D-3D) and the other is used with non-D or G type lenses.

What is the difference between wide and standard on a picture?

You will see more detail in highlights and shadows (i.e. if you are a few stops over exposed, you will still see the details of a white wedding dress. If you are a few stops under, you will see the details of the shadows of large canyons on the beach) using the wide feature. The wide mode is used to obtain a larger dynamic range with the S3. The standard mode uses the same dynamic range as the S2. If you are looking for faster write speeds, you would use the standard mode, as the wide mode takes longer to write information. Standard is also used to obtain a smaller Raw file size. Based on the scene being shot, only a photographer would know if he would need more dynamic range then usual. It depends on the highlights and shadows of the subject or scene.

What is the difference between the F1 & the F2 film simulation mode?

F1 simulation mode suppresses flaring in flash highlights when the flash is used and stresses smooth tonal transitions in the reproduction of skin tones. It is ideal for portrait studio work where the aim is professional standard negative (i.e. Pro Neg Film). F2 simulation mode provides vibrant reproduction of natural colors such as blue skies and is ideal for landscape and nature photography. Almost like shooting with slide film (i.e. Fuji chrome/ Velvia) Note: Color spaces needs to be set on sRGB and D-Range set to wide in order to use these modes. Color, Tone and Sharpness cannot be changes in any F simulation mode.

Should the custom white balance feature be used with or without a flash?

You can use customer white balance with or without a flash. If you use a flash to do a custom WB, you must adjust the F-stop and make it narrower. If you do not do so, the custom WB will over expose every time when using a white card. White balance is used to measure the Kelvin temperature that the light source is outputting so that the camera can set itself to that specific reading.
