Emerson EWR20V4 -can't format discs for recording
mine says NB108. You may have the correct remote. make sure after you push setup that you use the lower set of arrows, not the ones beside the play/stop buttons. this should allow you to move over and push right arrow, moving you over the disk options allowing you to format and other options. i can't tell you how many times i've pushed the wrong arrow and thought something was the matter. additionally, you may only be allowed to use up to 8x recording speed disks. i've had mine awhile, and have had a service pack that allowed me to go from 4x speed to 8x speed. there is no service pac to allow you go higher on the dvd-r. i believe the highest you can use on the dvd-rw is 2x.
hope this helps
Need an upgrade for EWR20V4
I have a firmware upgrade for the EWR20V4 but am awaiting a response from the manufacturer as to whether or not (and how) I should use it..
The problem on my unit is that it will not play certain episodes of a Season 1 TV series I purchased but will play a full length movie with no problem. I'll keep you posted. Possibly I can make a copy of the firmware upgrade and mail it to you. (Unknown if that's a legal thing or not at this point.)
Thanks
Mike
Can't record to DVD
make sure it is a dvd-4 8x or lower if you have the service pac....4x or lower if not. 2x dvd-rw. hope it helps
I can format dvds or
make sure that when trying to format dvd's you are using the bottom portion of the controls. i know it sounds silly, but the center arrows are for dvd playing and control....ff...rw....play, and the lower controls are more functional.
i'm not sure, but if you put in a blank dvd-r disk, it will allow you to format after going to the "setup" then using the lower arrow moving the selection over DVD. format is allowed in that selection. If you have already recorded on the DVD-R i don't believe it allows you to format, it only allows you to edit or finish.
i'm not sure how the dvd-rw works as i haven't used one in a long time. in theory, you should be able to format a DVD-rw.
hope it helps.

Then I seen a laser lens cleaner, it was under $10 dollars at Wal mart. Came home reset the played 1st then tried the cleaning disc. I"M recording AGAIN and no error messages!

Emerson EWR 20V5

I posted this Jan 3, 2009 and seem to have a solution.
Similar problem. E4 54037380 Can not record on this disc. Even though it is from the same package of DVD-Rs that I have successfully recorded to previously. Contacted them about 9 months ago without a successful resolution so I am trying again. Unit will play any DVDs, will record and play back DVD-RWs but will not record on my imation DVD-Rs 8X discs that worked fine in the past. Starts to record for a few seconds and then the error message appears (sometimes with slightly different final 4 digits of error number). Other postings have suggested: maybe a firmware update is available (I requested and we will see Emerson's response), trying slower speed discs (I am skeptical since these 8x imation discs in this same package previously worked, and the instructions say 1-16x for DVD-Rs), unplugging the unit for 1/2 hour to reset the unit (did not work), playing the last disc recorded to the end and then trying a new disc (now it recorded for about 30 seconds rather than 10 seconds but then got E4 54043E02 error message, different but still did not work). So I am hoping for something more productive out of Emerson this time.
Update Jan 17,2009. Bought a CD and DVD cleaner disc with the little brushes on it. Cleaned the EWR20V5 per the cleaner instructions and tried to recod on the imation DVD-R 8X that I had used successfully in the past, no luck, same error message. So I bought another brand, maxell DVD-R 4.7GB up to 16X and IT WORKED. The instructions on pg 25 say for DVD-R "up to 16X" may be used but "4X-8X disc is recommended". Go figure, no idea why the 16X worked but they did in this case. So just a suggestion to try other brands. Someone else had suggested that also so I gave it a shot. $8 of new discs and $13 for the cleaner and I've back in business.
Will not play some dvd
some tapes you put in mite be made of the computer witch some times does'nt work or your dvd's are scratched up. my old dvd player did that same thing (i bought a new 1 at the end it worked fine after)

you have to have a dvd RW that says write speed 1x -2x. this is an older dvd. most newer ones are 8-16x speed. Sony makes them and you can get them at most stores. you have to read the back.

Will not record dvd's
There are different kinds of DVD recorders and different kinds of recordable DVD disks. Your disk must match the format of your recorder. (eg DVD -rw, dvd -r, dvd +rw, dvd +r). Look on the front panel of the emerson recorder and see what emblems are printed on it. Your dvd must match the kind. Also, if a dvd is of the -r or +r variety and has been finalized you cannot overwrite/rewrite to it. (From a quick web search it appears your dvd uses dvd -r.)

Try using 8x and lower DVDs and -R ones; try cleaning with CD cleaning disk and then try recording a few min again.
If that doesn't help try unplugging and waiting about 30min then put in disk that was previously recorded and go to last item and play it to end (if 2hr long skip to last skip and then play until it finishes) - now try just recording a few min using the manual DVD record button and see if error comes up again - usually this unplugging somehow resets everything. Hope this helps ya'll.
I need a remote control.
I have just ordered one. After visiting loads of sites trying to match my model number, I found one.
The site is `AV UK` and its approx. £13.00! Bargain.
