Do you really want the Olympus software when there are better options available?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

How long have you had this memory card? What you can do is to try and format it first using your computer. And then reformat it again using the camera.

To format from your computer, you should a memory card reader so that you can access the card. After the usual device detection process, locate the drive and then for Windows users, right click it and then hit Format. Accept the default settings but do not forget to check Quick Format. Let the process finish. And then proceed with the formatting process on your camera.

You need to format a card in the camera to erase and optimize it for the camera. Go into the menu and scroll to "format" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

The problem you are describing is a problem with something on the main processing board of the camera. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced.
Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product. The cost is $99 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.
You may want to call Customer Service to discuss the repair process with them. Their telephone number is 800-622-6372 option 2 and then option 3.

The problem is that the largest xD card that your camera can support is an M or H 512mb card. The 1gb or 2gb cards are not compatible. The firmware in the camera cannot support memory storage with that capacity. The camera came out before those cards did and there no plans to upgrade the camera to allow those types of cards to be supported.

By default Olympus cameras do not print or show the date on the images when they are downloaded to a PC. Olympus does not include this functionality because they feel that it detracts from image quality. There is a function of the camera called print order that you can set that it will print the date on the images but this is only if you take the card to a photo processing store. However if you use the Olympus Master software and print the images that you have previously transferred there is a check box in the print setting window that you can add the date and or time to the printed image.
However the computer will only show the date information as part of the photo properties.
