Philip Rear Projection HDTV has a white shadow.

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.

Started by having curved lines at the bottom of

It seems like it had a convergence problem first. These sets have a number of protection resistors around the two convergence IC's and if more than two resistors pop or either of the chips short, the set will then be dead.

A quick visual look inside at the resistors will tell you if they are bad.

Let me know if you want to look and I will tell you where and what to look for.

The inspection will take only a few minutes and depending on what you find I can tell what is involved in the repair.

Color dull or black, no

This can only mean one thing. The three CRTs at the back are dying. The phosphors in them are losing their brrightness. Replacing them should resolve the issue. Parts should cost you around 300-400$, but I am not sure you want to do this yourself as this is a highvoltage circuit and the CRTs themselves act as giant capacitors and hold voltages of the order of 30000V. They have to be safely discharged before removing the CRTs

I have a Philips 60" with a convergence problem.

info20999,

You need to use the exact chips that are in your unit. Any other ones would cause bigger problems and not work. The number is on the IC and from what you have said you must have already identified them. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4220499-change_projection_tv_convergence_ics which explains in detail how to change the units. You will need very good soldering skills and equipment. Also an attention to detail couldn't hurt. It can be done but be concientious and methodical. Leave nothing to chance and your repair should turn out great.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating. Great ratings will keep experts helping everyone solve their problems. Thank you.

Buy a reel of Desolder Braid, that will allow you to remove multiple solder pins by desoldering each one in turn. A solder ****** will work but modern pcboards tend to have very thin copper and will be destroyed very easily.
Hope this helps.

I am able to adjust all the color convergences

The two convergence IC's need to be changed on the convergence board, and also check the low ohm resisters that might have change resistance on the convergence too. The red and blue should move up and down and left and right. The green is sationally.

The colors look very weak.

The TV has coolant in the CRTs that after years of use get cloudy. you will need to have a shop replace the coolant in all three, it is pretty involved so its best to have a trained tech. do it.

Sound went out on tv was told i need a sound

This model had a lot of odd problems including loss of audio.

With back off as you look from back are three large circuit boards.

One on the far left has another board about 4X5 inches plugged into it at the left rear corner.

Every one of these sets, that is the bad board--controls audio, remote and many other things. Large board it is plugged into is called Small signal Board (SSB), small one is small signal module (SSM).

It is plug in board held with two metal tabs at either end on bottom, It will have printed on it a part number (usually on a white label) with the part number, popular one ends in 2581 but are variations.

Last time I used one it was about 100 exchange(they are all rebuilt boards now)

Ten minute task to replace with back off and 95% chance it is your problem.

Everyone of these sets with no sound or intermittent sound, it was the problem.
