Brightness and dark scene problems

you need to check your picture menu to verify you contrast is at max and brightness level is at approx 55% . if good , call for service and have htem check the setting on the screen controls. sometime they drift with heat, cold and age. when this happens, they usually have to reset the grey scale (black and white content) of the picture. Beyond that could be a defective red crt drive pcb or red crt or small signal panel.

Bluring of colors

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.

When you turn on the tv it turns itself off after

All projection TVs have built in safety circuits in case of a malfunction. There maybe an indicator on the set that blinks after it shuts down (not all models have this). This is an issue for a service shop as auto shutdown is reserved for the more serious issues.
A likely problem with the vertical circuits (top to bottom part of the picture) or the high voltage circuits. You will need a technician.

You have one of two problems. Sometimes both.

Problem #1) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Problem #2)

Your TV may have a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can hire a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a step by step picture instruction guide, original OEM parts, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Philips 52 inch screen TV\r\nType: 50PF9631D/37

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. A plasma TV is a very hard working device. It is working harder than any TV that has been built before, and as a result it produces a lot of heat. 75% of technical problems in plasma TV's are caused by overheating problems. From what you have described the issue seems to be with the power supply board however, X,Y sustain, buffer boards controls picture, fires the gas, and many others functions. When either of these boards goes bad common problems include negative image, no image, vertical or horizontal stripes on picture, turns on and than turns off, and many more. You’ll need to open the back off the TV and check for any swollen/bulged/leaky capacitors on these boards and replace whichever has gone bad. All this is only recommended if you have electrical expertise & know how to solder/re-solder components as these units contain high voltages even when switched off. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee
