Problem with Western Digital 1.0TB WD10EALX hard drive.
Having looked at the dock, if it's not appearing in the windows disk management I'm afraid you'll have to try another i/o method to test whether the drive is ok. The easiest option is to find someone with a computer which has a spare sata slot and partition it with that (assuming it sees it) or try a different device like a sata to usb converter. Alternatively you could make a linux or other bootable usb stick with formatting/partitioning utility and put the drive in your laptop, boot from the stick and partition it that way. I don't think there are any user settings in the dock you have and no jumpers on the drive so you're scuppered. Let us know how you get on?
Of course having partitioned it it might just not be compatible with your dock, although
Just one more thing if you haven't, try connecting the power to the dock before you plug it into the laptop and try each of your usb ports
Chkdsk error
Check disk is looking for bad sectors and will attempt to fix them. If check disk cannot Finnish this may be indicating the hard drive is failing. I recommend to replace it before all data is lost.

You only need the serial number for warranty status check, as this is unique. Use the model number to search for the correct cable.
Hi I have a Western
Hookup that hard drive to another computer. If it works then that means there is a problem with the ports on your computer. If the drive doesn't work on another computer, then that means the drive is bad and would need to be replaced. Let me know the exact model number of your hard drive and then I can explain to you how to setup automatic daily backups of your hard drive.
Recover data from western digiatal my passport
this is usually done with a data recovery expert who is usually findable online or through business yellow page listings. the snapshot of recoverable data might run you 50 to 100 bucks but it's worth knowing before diving in on this sort of service

Depending on how old your WD hard drive may be....it's either 12VDC
or 5VDC - voltage can be checked on older drives the use 4 pin plugs
(usually white and referred to as Modulex plugs). Newer WD drives
may use SATA cables to power. Most drives indicate all this info on
their labels (top-face of drive). Good Luck.
Fatal device hardware error
It means your Hard Drive is dead or about to be dead.
You have a few choices. If it is still running you can try to back it up. But in doing this you may destroy all your data on the hard drive.
If you are somewhat mechanically inclined you can take the Hard Drive out and send it in to have the Data recovered. But mind you it may cost $1k to get it done. Just look for data recovery online at western digitals website. They will tell you of companies that they recommend.
The down side is if your Operating system is on it and you don't have a back up of that operating system you are going to have to go buy a new one. Also you WILL need a new hard drive.
Sorry but I hope this helps you out.
