Tried to upgrade my firmware on the zen touch to be able to use it with Vista. Upgrade on XP and with media player 10 as Creative say. However player now only in recovery mode PC does not recognise player, cannot get any firmware to player shows version 0.0.10 on player screen. Any help appreciated
I had the same issue after trying to update firmware the PC kept saying the player was not connected, I have copied the reply below from Creative Customer Services on how I fixed this problem. I was lucky that I have access to an old PC that had WMP 10 so I didn't need to mess with my own PC. However, there was some messing about with the instructions to get the fix. My main tip is follow the instructions below, then go to device manager and uninstall the Zen from your USB list, it will probably be flagged with a yellow triangle. Remove it totally and then reinstall the Zen driver, this worked for me after I had taken the steps listed here;
1. Please uninstall all Creative software & Drivers.
2. If WMP 11 is installed, remove it including Media Player 11 runtime
(may require a reboot for each thing).
Go to add/remove programs and uninstall these two files (this will put
your pc back to wmp10). http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?sid=16737
Related topic is further explained on this page http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#DevicenotrecognizedafterinstallingWindowsMediaPlay
3. Download the following files from the website and save them to a
unique folder.
http://support.creative.com/welcome.aspx
You may have to select your own Product > Choose your Specific Model>
then Double Click.
Down below; please ensure that your Operating System selected is Windows XP.
Driver : Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version 1.30.03
Firmware: Creative Zen Touch PlaysForSure Firmware 2.11.01
You may want to click the Show Details button on the right side for
additional information.
4. Re-install the Zen Driver and reboot the PC and then connect the
player.
5. Make sure the firmware update is ready,
Run the program but don't click the language bit yet), leave the mouse
hovering over your language selection.
6. On the Zen - select the option "reload OS"
7. As soon as it flashes up "reload new firmware now via USB" click the
language button on the firmware.
8. Now PC should find it and allow you to re-load the firmware. (it may
take a few attempts)
9. Once complete, click close and restart the pc. Everything should now
be fine.
10. If installation is successful, you can re-install your WMP11 and
everything should be okay this time.
Good luck

I turn on player, it says rebuilding library. A minute later it says FIRMWARE PROBLEM and it shuts off. I can't play any songs. Can it be fixed, what should I do?
To Fix any problems with broken firmware form attempted "playsforsure" firmware updates etc where your pc finds it as a 20mb drive and it sits in recovery mode and does bugger all: (fix courtesty of cinderlee in creative forums) 1. Uninstall all creative software & drivers 2. Uninstall Media Player 11 and Media Player 11 runtime (will require a reboot for each thing). This is done by going to add/remove programs and uninstalling (this will put your pc back to wmp10). 3. Re-install the Zen Driver from the creative website and reboot 4, Plug Zen in. 5, Make sure you have the firmware update ready, run it but don't click the language bit yet), leave the mouse hovering over your language selection. 6. On the Zen- select "reload OS" 7. As soon as it flashes up "reload new firmware now via USB" click the language button 8. Tada, now the pc should find it and allow you to re-load the firmware. (it may take a few attempts) 9. Once complete, click close and restart the pc. Everything should now be fine. 10. once you are happy you can re-install WMP11 and it will work fine. Cheers!

My Zen Xtra was dropped the other day and now displays "hard disk problem". I have a spare laptop hard drive. Can I just replace the drive, format and install the fimware and then transfer songs back on it? Thanks much.
THIS WORKED FOR ME:
32. I bought one of these and used it on and of for 4 months.
One day I got a "harddisk problem" and tried everything. Because I
purchased in the US, Creative said that it was out of warranty but they
would fix for £100. I looked around the web and found a thread that
shows how to fix it. The solution, and this is a bit technical, is -
seriously - to hit it on the right hand side very firmly on the right
hand side with your hand whilst switching it on. It re-indexed and I've
never had a problem since.

i upgraded my zen xtra 60 gig to 80 gig, now i don't want to use zen xtra anymore, i made the 80 gig hard drive as an external hd, but my laptop can't read it, even all my pc can't read it, i hear the usb bleep, but it doesnt display the hard disk

Unclear if you want to just use the HD as a drive, or whether you want to recover the MP3 data from it?
This may help to access the drive

Can't find firmware downloads for this player at Creative Labs website. Also have Mac OSx system. Any help much appreciatedg
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
It would appear that the fix requires a Windows machine. Solution then would be two fold:
The last could be achieved by:
Of course the easiest is to use a Windows based computer of a friend.
Your
Creative Zen Nomad Xtra mp3 player uses a memory system similar to a
flash/thumb drive much like the hard disk of any computer. Just as a
computer on certain instances freezes/hangs, the same would happen to
your MP3. Like again the computer, the OS would need to be
re-installed. In your MP3 the OS is the firmware which has to be
reloaded/updated.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
