My fax won't print copy's

Based ENTIRELY of the total LACK of make and model information about your fax unit, my guess is that the software DRIVER is corrupted! But of course, that is a total GUESS! Let me show you why that is SO IMPORTANT! My favorite ant broke her leg ... leaving her only FIVE good legs to run around on! Most people know that ants (INSECTS) have six legs. But you MIGHT have assumed that my ant was my mom's sister, or my dad's sister, and that I simply misspelled AUNT!

I have an HP 2140

An ECM error usually means that the connection is so poor that even the Error Correction Mode cannot cope with it.
Perhaps you started corresponding with someone with a poor telephone line, or your own line has become distorted. Distortions may be the fault of the telephone company or there may be interference from some appliance you or your neighbors recently acquired.
It would be good to consult with your phone company first so they check your line quality for you.

Welcome to Fixya

Please see procedure below:

First is to press the "Access Cartridge" button on the HP 1040 Fax's control panel. Button is the closest to the number keypad on the front of the machine. Second is to pull down on the top of the HP 1040 Fax's front panel. Pull up on the bottom of the cartridge compartment cover to reveal the cartridge. Third, remove the old HP 1040 Fax cartridge by pulling it toward you, then up and out of the cartridge carriage. Fourth, remove the new HP cartridge from its packaging, making sure to remove the clear tape over the bottom of the cartridge. Insert the cartridge, leaning it slightly toward you, then push the lowered side up until it clicks into place in the cartridge carriage. Lastly, close the cartridge compartment cover and the HP 1040 Fax's front panel. Press the "Start" button, then "1" on the numerical keypad to indicate you have installed a new cartridge.

I am having trouble with the printer. The DR is

Definitely you have a problem with the printer.
That will not prevent you from sending faxes out, but did you try to make a copy?

If the machine sat idle for some time, the ink in the jets would have dried, but this will not generate any error messages.

There are cleaning kits available, and they usually work.

Machine says paper jammed but cant locate any such

Welcome to Fixya

Paper jam can only be seen in two loactions. Please see procedure below on how to check paper jam on the unit.
Clearing a paper jam from the rear door Follow the steps below to clear a paper jam in the input tray through the rear door.
  1. Press in the tab on the left side of the rear door to release the door. Remove the door by pulling it away from the unit. CAUTION: Trying to clear a paper jam from the front of the unit can damage the print mechanism. Always access and clear paper jams through the rear door. Figure 1: Remove the rear door

    I have just set-up my

Your phone will normally ring when another fax machine is trying to reach yours. You can switch your Fax to Silent Mode using the menu. This way you won't hear the phone ringing. Using your Menu key go to the Advanced Menu. Then using the arrow keys scroll through until you see Silent Mode. You can either have the mode turned on all of the time or for a certain scheduled time. In case you don't have your user manual handy go to the following website to download a copy:

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodClassId=-1&contentType=SupportManual&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=424308

You can also check with your phone company to see if they offer the Distinctive Ring service. This will allow your phone system to ring in a different way if it is a fax machine that is calling. At least that way you won't find yourself running to answer the phone only to find out that it is another fax machine.

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you in resolving your issue. Should you need further information or assistance please do not hesitate to let us know.
